What amp to consider as an upgrade or next step up to the Job 225 ? ......

i think with so many great ss amps why not play with great tube preamps. Less maintance issues and less heat than tube based amps. The choices on preamps looks good depending on what country of origin you want to start with-Japan-Zanden, Shindo, Swiss-ch precision, Nagra, England-audionote, USA-too many to list.

I could imagine the Wadia Intuition being a nice piece. Maybe I should get my hands on one. I could do tubes downstairs on the "better" system, but have tubes for the Cornwalls.

How about a Constellation Audio Virgo and Centaur combo?

:)

Jock,

Thanks. If I am not mistaken there is a new Constellation integrated coming out that is supposed to be outstanding. I do need to give them a serious listen.

Joe, a little gem that I like is the Line Magnetic, great bang for the buck too! As Mike suggested, another similar line is the PrimaLuna although I haven't heard this line but have heard a lot about it.

Kev,

Doug got me hooked on the Line Magnetic amps. I do have at least one in mind. Thee is so much great gear.

Nick,

I see what you've gone through finding the right amp for your TADs. The TADs are a tough customer. I'll have to see what might be next for me.

Wells Audio (SE input) or Hypex Ncore NC400 (BAL input)
Wells Audio-two models priced at 4k & 6k.
Hypex Ncore-amp module & power supply run about 1400 depending on exchange rate. Add a case, iec, binding posts, iec and assembly which could raise the total for a complete pair of mono blocks depending on choices from under 2k to slightly over 3k.
Also as mentioned Modwright KWA-100SE.....absolute great match for Klipsch.

Bargain choice out of the above would be the Ncore. Sounds nothing like other Class D amps that I have owned. Well worth a demo!. Plenty of reviews below.

Did someone say my name?!!! Hey Joe, 100 watts of pure tube love...:woot:

(and it can be run as a preamp as well) Oh decisions, decisions...

501IA-600x412.jpg

501 IA - $4250
4 x KT120 / 2 x 6SN7 / 1 x 12AU7 / 2 x 12AX7
100 wpc Push-Pull / Class AB
4 line inputs + pre amp in
4, 8 and 16 ohm speaker terminals
Point to point wiring throughout
Remote control volume with mute button
Tube cage

Joe - there are some great suggestions here....but at the rate at which you (we) swap gear....resale - or should I say, "ease" of resale - is an important consideration. The big names (especially McIntosh, ARC, Classe) are easy/no brainer resales.

Just something to consider...

That's really nice Doug.

Nice avatar Mike. I like.

I think it would both help answer your question and help others put your comments on the Job 225 into perspective if you describe what remains to be desired in a power amp beyond what the Job does.

Dynamis,

Welcome to the forum.

Interesting question. I am not sure how to answer. I am actually very happy with the Job 225 and have not tried to tax the amp into submission. So for me right now, it's doing amazingly well. I think more power would be nice so I could use it on a wider variety of speakers but will test it on my incoming Studio2's this weekend. I'll see how it does on them. Maybe and ever so slightly sweeter top end (for my taste), although vocals are outstanding as it is now. I hope to see how it does with a good tube preamp in the next month or so and I will report back.

Got your back on this one Joe!.....

Ha! Now thats being way too sensible! It's not what it cannot do & what one expects it to do, it's all about what the next one might do. :D

Kev,

You know me all too well. I guess I was trying to say that without realizing it. It's all about the next great high :)

So did anyone ever compare the 225 to one of the Primaluna tube amps?

I'm on the fence with the 225. It will run my Spendors fine. A nice tube amp would run either my Spendors OR my Quads. hmmm......

If you want a little more grunt and musicality out of your Spendors, consider a new version Naim integrated (if you want SS).

The new PrimaLuna HP series are excellent, bringing some new auto biasing technologies, terrific tube rolling options and that same great PrimaLuna sound and great value.

I heard them at CES. Kevin Deal from Upscale and I listened together. I was very impressed and I keep thinking about that great sound I heard.
