Paul, yours is better. Just get the 3D arm.
I think the Prime comes standard with the 10.5-inch 3D arm.
That said why not add the 3D to the Classic 3?
My new Classic 3 arrives tomorrow. I got it with the 12" 3D arm. I asked my consultant, Stirling Trayle, about the Prime. He said it is an inexpensive way to get the 3D arm, since the price of the Prime is not much more that the arm alone. However, this is not a way to get a Classic 3 with 3D arm for a bargain price. The TT for the Prime also has to fit into that price point.
Larry
you're replacing an HRX for a classic 3??
Quick! Make Larry an offer for his HRX. Tell him you love his kids and you will help him convert some of his massive LP collection to digital.
depending on which HR-X he has, imo the C3 may not be a step forward. theres lots of discontinuity of design with VPIs even within the same model range that clear cut sonic differences are not easy to quantify.
i still have the TNT, i put an ET-2 on it. once its gone i'm taking a break from vpi for a while.
If the ET-2 didn't have grounding/hum issues, I would still own it. It's a far better tonearm than many people ever realized. Like you, mine was last mounted to a TNT table. Now that I have an SP-10MKII and an SME-312s arm, I don't miss either of them.
no hum issues over here. my understanding was Harry had the ET-2 in mind when he designed the TNT, as you know it works very well on that 'table compared the SOTA Star I last used w/ the ET-2.
The Prime looks like one of THE bargains in this hobby of ours, a stupid good deal.
