For about twenty years I have used the VPI power line conditioner for my VPI 19 mark 4 turntable. The company does not think that they can fix it, but offered to try for $200. I am thinking of buying their much newer SDS line conditioner. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I have one. Wouldn't have my Classic 3 without it. Speed irregularities kill. The SDS ensures perfect speed.

Thanks Rob. Can you tell me if you have used the Phoenix? Did you like it? And I will need to check,on the voltage of the Vpi 19.

The old VPI power line conditioner was NOT a speed controller. The SDS is. The difference is startling. And if you want to hear something you also won;t believe, try putting a better power cord on the SDS. It definitely makes a difference.

I do have both the falcon and roadrunner. I had the latest SDS and sold it in favor of the Phoenix pieces. You can get by with the falcon controller if your motor is 5W (Label on underside of motor will tell you). The Eagle is for higher wattage motors. The Roadrunnner uses a hall effect senor to monitor platter speed in real time and talks directly to the falcon controller which makes continual adjustments to compensate for eccentricities in the rotating system, belt stretch, stylus drag, etc. The SDS is a toy by comparison, and no where near as accurate.

I sold the TNT and moved on to a better 'table with its own controller. I still have the Falcon and Roadrunner plus a new Hurst 5W 300 rpm motor with the latest pulley from VPI. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. It’s needed more now than ever. In olden days (the last 30 years) there were at one time or another, over 20 audio stories between where I lived and worked. There are now just three. And I use two dealers who don’t even have stores.

So I can’t go in and see, or try out, many of the products we discuss. So your opinions are helpful. After Mike posted, but before Rob did, I called my dealer to get the SDS and he came and installed it this morning. I am going to try it out for the weekend and see.

I have the Phoenix Eagle and Roadrunner tachometer for my VPI Classic 3 and it is accurate to the 4th decimal (the Roadrunner display reads a constant 33.335 virtually all the time when at stable speed). I could definitely hear an improvement immediately upon installing it.
