Well, I did it. I had the turntable on a cushioned chair and was changing feet when it fell about a foot and slightly bent the tonearm. The woman at vpi is being very nice and told me to send it to them to see if they can repair it. Whether they can or not could anybody recommend a better tonearm for a Classic 1
Thanks,
Robert

Robert - that's unfortunate, but you're in good hands. VPI customer service is top notch. I accidentally ripped out one of the tone arm leads for the cartridge. I sent it to VPI, fixed and it was back to me in under two weeks - no charge either. :congrats:

Absolutely use this as an opportunity to upgrade to the 3D tonearm. You already have the base, just need the new armwand.

Nope....different base.....you need a new tonearm.

Sure it's a different base and just not changing the bearing? When I had the SS Reference tt, all HW did is send me a new unipivot bearing to install for the 10.5 arm. And I seem to recall the same thing for friend who went from the 12-inch metal to 3D arm.

Myles et al....when I went from a 10.5i, to the 3D, I thought I could just buy the arm wand, but Harry told my that I needed the base too. VPI is always making changes so I don't know for sure...only what I experienced.

Ok. :) Maybe HW meant the bearing instead of base. :) but getting that bearing out is a bitch because it feels like it's glued and locked down with that bolt.

I really want to thank everybody for all the information and encouragement. I had the tonearm packed by UPS yesterday, better than by me, an ex- roofer that can be a little rough with things, and it looks like vpi received it today
