VPI Avenger

Is no question about a company ever able to be broached?

I am not "bashing VPI." Yes, VPI turntables sound fantastic, just as many other turntables sound fantastic. I never remotely suggested otherwise. I enjoyed greatly for 18 years my VPI TNT Mk. IV.

PS: In concept I think magnetic drive is very cool!

Ron, I'm sorry. Maybe bashing was a little harsh, I've heard your argument about Harry for years. And I did say that I understand where that's coming from :)

The bottom line is that VPI makes some great sounding tables and they have done so for years. If nothing else, give HW some credit for not being wedded to some dogma that only allows him to follow a single path. HW has obviously been willing to try pretty much anything in order to make his tables sound better and he has always provided an upgrade path as well. Sometimes I wish I still had my TNT and SDS around and had a chance to hear it with my SME 312S arm.

PS: I have seen magnetic drive only on the Clearaudio Master Innovation -- and I think it is very cool!

Transrotor also incorporates magnetic drive on some of their tables, and if I'm not mistaken, was first to the table(pun intended) w/ that tt concept.

I applaud VPI for their willing to "flip-flop"! Unlike the general population who condemns a politician that has a change of heart, (which I see as a demonstration of intelligence) we should support VPI in their attempt to market tables of many designs. Maybe you like the sound of a SSM with rim drive while I like my TNT with the Tri-Pulley set-up. Springs have their disadvantages, air-bladders were a good idea to replace the springs but squash balls are easier, cheaper and replaceable for $5.99. WTF is wrong with that?

The air bladders had a tendency to leak which is why I think they were swapped out for the balls.

Mark, go the distance with this one & splurge. I am over the moon with my AMG V12 & am so happy I didn't short change my tt purchase. Unfortunately for me the next cartridge will be upwards of 10k....
