This was surprise to me as I thought, vinyl sales were slowing down.

For the first time this century, vinyl musicsales eclipsed $1 billion in a calendar year.

Vinyl purchases in 2025 reached $1.04 billion in the U.S., according to a report published Monday by the Recording Industry Association of America. Once considered an endangered format, vinyl sales grew for the 19th consecutive year in 2025, per a news release from the non-profit organization tasked with tracking music sales.

Yeah, but new LP's now retail for $30 - $40+ each. I'd like to see a year by year graph of actual numbers of LP's sold. No doubt the numbers are going up, but I'm sure total sold is still a fraction of what they were in their heyday.

I still buy vinyl, used, and new, from time to time. I watch the Tracking Angle site for anything special. I just got the re-issue of Frampton Comes Alive, no telling how many times I listened to that album in the late ‘70s. He had a new album drop today. I’ll probably listen to it on Qobuz before considering it in physical media.

I pretty much only buy CDs today to rip to music files I can’t obtain elsewhere (hdtracks, bandcamp, etc.) the physical CD goes directly down to the basement, and when that box gets full, I donate to the library.

Currently waiting for my daughters family to move back into their house, so I can deep clean my music room, and adjoining room (2 cats have lived there for 6 months 😵‍💫) before I can safely clean and listen to vinyl again.

Thanks for the charts Craig. While not the same volume going back to the 1970s, it is clear the trend of vinyl sales has been up for the last 15 years.

Also, not surprised about CD sales. Recently, I tried selling my 1500 or so CDs to a local large vinyl and CD reseller. I was offered $50 for the entire collection of mint CDs. I decided to keep it; re-connected my Esoteric CD/SACD player to the MSB Cascade, purchased a rack for 700 CDs and donated the rest of the collection.
