Upgrade question for my fellow Bryston amp owners ….. Are you planning on upgrading to the new cubed technology?

Thanks. This conversation is proving to be quite informative in identifying differences between the series. Am I correct in assuming that like the power supplies, the toroidal transformers won't be replaced during the upgrade? Would you mind giving some insight into this new custom storage type of transformer and how it differs from what was previously being used?

Sorry I was not clear on that - the SST2 transformers were also the storage type transformers. The new transformers just have some minor changes and are still the storage type transformers. There were also some electrical requirements we had to make to the transformers so they would pass all these new hydro and safety restrictions that are being imposed world wide.

Thanks for the clarification

A question about the XLR connectors on the new series. Will you be eliminating the locking mechanism on all the "older" amps to bring them in line with the "newer" amps like the 28 which did away with the locking mechanism?

Gee I have not checked that out - will let you know.

lol.. I finally stumped you :) I know this was also a trend in general for all new products over the past number of years not just amps, so items like the BDA-3, BUC-1, BDP-2, and even as far back as the SP-3 and BDA-2. What prompted me to ask was the shot of the back of the 14 over in another thread, that actually still had the locking mechanism but perhaps that was just a prototype.

"finally stumped you" just goes to show how good James Tanner is at representing his companies products compared to most in this industry.

Interesting... so even the 28? Why the change in philosophy? Wasn't the removal of the locking mechanism for safety reasons so the cables broke away rather than pulling the equipment with them?

Hi

Yes it was for safety reasons but was based on the cable pulling the component off the shelf (ex Headphone Amp). With the larger amps it is highly unlikely that would happen.

Also a lot of our customers seem to prefer the locking version.

Thanks for the explanation. Definitely a good point about the amps, they weight a lot more than the other products that's for sure. Part of the allure of XLR's has always been that satisfying click as the lock engages and you have comfort knowing the cable is not going to work itself loose over time. I can see how customers would have been disappointed if it was not there.

Are the existing products that never offered it at all able to be sent in to be fitted with the locking XLR's?
