Uh oh, did I get the wrong certridge? Ortofon 2M Bronze

Ok, I have a new Ortofon 2M Bronze I was going to mount on my Denon DP47f, but I just read Mr. Fremer's cartridge shootout article just published and under the 2M Bronze he states that it demands a careful SRA set up. The problem is my Denon nor my Pioneer allow for that adjustment (and I couldn't do it if they did anyway). Is it true that this cartridge demands that SRA thing or will I be perfectly fine with a standard set up consisting of just correct mounting and alignment with protractor? I'm hoping it's the latter or I just wasted a hard earned $400 with no recourse. ~Eric
 
I'm not a cartridge guru but I alway thought sra and vta are pretty much the same thing.
Unless you know the angle your record is cut at you can only set it by ear.
I would imagine that if its real muddy or to thin in the bass and there is no way to adjust it. You would need a spacer to get the correct angle. But what do I know. Lol
I do know there are ways to fix it and you did not waste your money.
Congrats on the new cartridge.

Its a cartridge when the "A" key doesn't work ...LOL

On a serious side, Eric...see how it look...if the base of the cart seems level you are okay. If it is nose down, you can always add a thicker mat or add a felt mat...tail down, use a spacer between the cart and headshell....

Thanks Rob. The base of the cart may look level to me, but may not be in reality. However, on the other hand, it probably should be level normally. I think if it is not it might be that the cart itself is too tall in which case a thinner mat would be needed. That said, I've heard of a number of folks mounting 2M Blues with no problem at all and the cart body is just as tall as the Bronze.
As for mats, the only one I know about is the GEM one? (I'm not sure of the name). They are pricey though. As for using spacers if need be,where does one get those and who's going to install them? (I won't, I have a hard enough time just installing the cart normally).

Upon reading the rest of the article I see that Mr Fremer hates the 2M Bronze, but in the same breath states that it is best only for very expensive high-end systems and if used on anything less, it will sound bad. So I don't know what he thinks and it doesn't matter at the end of the day. Not saying anything against Mr. Fremer, just saying what he says does not apply to me, but he's an interesting guy all the same. With that, I placed the SRA thing under the audio snobbery BS column for things to be ignored.
I'm pretty sure it will be level and if it's not, my only concern is harming my records and if won't do that, then I have nothing to worry about.

Eric, Put the cartridge down on an LP without the motor running and use a lined index card as a guide to see if the top of the cartridge is level with the lines on the index cards. As to spacers if you need them, you can make them yourself out of pieces of the file folders we talked about earlier. They just go on top of the cartridge and you poke holes in them for the screws to go through.

Thank you Jack. I didn't remember the file folder trick, whoops. (I have almost no short term memory after my TIA a few years ago). That's why I print stuff out much of the time, like what you told me about set up. I just do not have it in front of me now, but I will when I go to do it.
So how do I do that index card trick? In other words, hold the index card edge on the LP, behind the cart on the side, with the lines facing me?
 
Eric, yes that is how it works. With the tone arm on the LP put the index card behind it and look at either the top or bottom of the cartridge body and see how it lines up with the lines on the index card. Whether you use the top or the bottom depends on which part of the cartridge is flat. If you are a "smidge" off one way or the other the world won't end. You can't use the top of the head shell as they are almost never flat.

My friend owns a Denon table. I have no idea of the model. But he also collects cartridges between $200 and $800. I think they are all mm's. And aside from the grado reference he bought used , his 2m bronze is the best one Ive heard on his setup. Be happy, you did real well and will love it.
