Two questions before I buy - Tidal and Powerline

Hi all,

Hoping you can help before I decide to buy either a D1 or D2.

I'm currently using an Arcam rPlay into my Accuphase E560 (going into an Accuphase Dac-40 board via co-ax) and playing from Tidal via the DTS Playfi app. Considering either an Auralic or Lumin but am leaning towards Lumin.

Two questions:

  1. I'm experiencing a problem that isn't being solved by DTS which means I can only see/access the last 200 albums in my favourites within Tidal. So effectively, I can only play 10% of my music. Can I check if the Tidal integration within the Lumin app has the same limit - hopefully you're all able to see your entire collections, whether playlists or favourite albums?
  2. As I cannot use a wired ethernet connection from my router/modem room, I'm going to have to use a Powerline socket to get ethernet connection. Appreciate it's not the ideal, but is anyone else using a similar solution and experiencing any issues?

Thanks in advance
James

1. To my knowledge we don't have an arbitrary limit in the Lumin app for that. If a size-related issue is found we'll fix it. Secondly, since we're OpenHome compliant, if you encounter certain weakness for Lumin app, you can use other controller apps such as Linn Kazoo and Bubble DS Next. Thirdly, you can always use Tidal official app from iPad and AirPlay to Lumin (limited to 16/44.1 non-MQA). Fourthly, Lumin is Roon Ready so you can also use Roon to play Tidal if you purchase a Roon subscription.

2. I'm fairly sure there are users using powerline network. As with WiFi, these technologies are environment and setup dependent. Personally I prefer WiFi (use a WiFi-Ethernet adapter or a suitable WiFi router in client mode), and you have to have a WiFi network for using Lumin app on iPad anyway.

3. The other brand you mentioned does not have a licensed MQA decoder for Tidal Masters.

Thank you Peter, having spent time reading through all the knowledge you've shared with people here that's put my mind at ease. And my wallet now has a D1 + MCRU upgraded power unit shaped hole in it!

I'd be interested to know which WiFi Ethernet adapter you use?

J

I don't actually use a WiFi Ethernet adapter, but if given a situation where wired network is not feasible, I'd look at WiFi options first.

Thanks Peter. Last question if you wouldn't mind - as I'm in the process of having some interior decoration/building installed, and I'm not familiar with the principle of wired streamers.

Assuming I went with a wired (via Powerline) option, would the D1 work if enclosed in a cuboard. Logic tells me it will but I'd like to check.

Thanks
J

Yes, it'll work but it'll become warm. The D2 should generate less heat.

Hi Peter, really sorry but in doing some research I came across the following and I'd like to check whether it will be an issue for my D1 before I buy the interconnects.

I'm using an Accuphase E560 integrated amp:

One thing I have discovered about Accuphase gear in Balanced (XLR) the pin polarity is reversed on Pin 2 and pin 3 compared to BAT, McIntosh etc. So if anyone plans to use Accuphase with any other brand with XLR's-pins 2 & 3 position must be swapped on the cable end going to the Accuphase gear.
1 Ground
2 Inverted (–)
3 Non-inverted (+)

Other brands
1 Ground
2 +
3 -

I guess there are several options:
1. Order a custom-made XLR cable
2. Use inverter plug
3. Turn on Lumin invert phase function (I suspect this may not be ideal for MQA)
4. Use RCA

I'll check with my coworkers and see if they have any other suggestions on Monday.
