CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., June 21 (Reuters) - Two months before the first total solar eclipse to cross the continental United States in a century, NASA on Wednesday is expected to detail its plans to study and promote a celestial show that will darken skies from Oregon to South Carolina.
During the Aug. 21 eclipse, the moon will pass between the sun and Earth, blocking the face of the sun and leaving only its outer atmosphere, or corona, visible in the sky.
It is the first coast-to-coast total eclipse since 1918.
Weather permitting, astronomy enthusiasts can watch as the moon's 70-mile (113-km) wide shadow crosses the country, starting at 10:15 a.m. PDT (1715 GMT) around Lincoln Beach, Oregon, and ending at 2:49 p.m. EDT (1849 GMT) in McClellanville, South Carolina.

I will be there, in Charleston SC, to watch all 3 minutes of it at 100%. I have my special glasses so I don't go blind.

Yeah, we will be about 45 minutes away from the spectacle, but being in OR, there might be more than a few peculiar dwellers out and about. It will be crazy there, traffic etc. We'll probably just stay home and watch the computer...
Cheers from ground zero...

Joe.......In 1979 I lived in Portland, Oregon where I experienced a total solar eclipse of the sun. It was a nice sunny morning in Portland that day. Then the eclipse began around 10:30 or so if I remember right. The daylight slowly gave way to complete darkness and streetlights came on. It was the strangest thing to see a day turn to night. I called my mom in Florida from Portland and we talked while she watched the eclipse on television. Then slowly the moon began to move from the total eclipse, then sunlight began to return over the city. It was amazing. Then, just over one year later I witnessed the eruption of Mt. St. Helens across the Columbia River from Portland. Truly astonishing events to see with my own eyes.

Here is a short video of the ABC coverage from Portland. Toward the end of their coverage they mention that it would be 38 years in the future, August 21, 2017, before another total eclipse of the sun would happen, and here I am in Florida now. I should be able to witness the eclipse from my north Florida location. Seeing two solar eclipses in one lifetime is incredible.
