You should get it and rent it out. Lol. $50 plus shipping to test all your tubes would be a great deal. You just gotta make sure they send it back lol!!!
 
Fantastic thread! I was thinking about this as well.
It sure would be good if I could do some basic testing as well as even a bit of "matching"
 
In all honesty, I don't have a clue.

I do know from talking to tube people over the years that most tube testers only test a fraction of the tube and only the more extensive (expensive I'm sure) do an adequate job to match tubes etc.

I don't think my preamp tubes will be a problem. I am more concerned about the power tubes taking the amp but there is a big fuse on my ART amps that should protect everything.

I remember when I was about 12 years old my mother used to give me a bag of tubes from our tv to take to the drugstore where they had a tube tester and see if they all worked.....seems like a very long time ago:) Oh wait, it was a very long time ago....50 years!
 
I used to go with my Dad to the local drugstore and they had a tube tester as you walk in. I'd play with all the knobs. Fun times.

I've tried many tube testers. Currently I have Amplitrex, Maxi-Matcher, Hickok 539, Western Electric KS-15874. All have strengths and weaknesses. Amplitrex is the most expensive, but most precise - however, it can't test a lot of tubes. Maxi-Matcher is good for quick matching of power tubes, but transconductance reading is not very precise. Hickok is great and can test 1000 or so tubes - having a spec for a tube, it can test anything. Western Electric is super fast and very precise - this one is considered to be the best vintage tester since it uses different circuitry for different types of tubes. Love them all, have to have them all, but I only could have one and needed to test only audio and power tubes and money was not an object... I would go with Amplitrex; otherwise, I would go with Western Electric KS-15874 (getting cards is PITA) or Hickok 539C. I tried Hickok 600, 6000 and TV-7, but wasn't impressed with them and let them go.
