Top Tier Amps

Performance is based on people’s biases. I want to discuss perceptions in the marketplace.

Mike, virtually everything is based on people's bias. And bias shapes perceptions. Ultimately it's all subjective and consensus shapes categories.

that did confuse me a little

Price and perception.

This thread has been fascinating. If you own it, you’re passionate about it being higher than others may perceive it in the market. Rogue is a perfect example.

!!!
the fastest ever?

Maybe. It’s not so easy to park your own opinions/biases at the door and look objectively at the market. Some good arguments have been made to boost some up and move some down. But for the most part, the list has remained pretty stable and I’ve been interested in the different views.

if i had to pick what i would add to your awesome shop, based on market perception and potential sucsess:
nagra, ch, audionet, accuphase

I trust Mikes opinions as I'm sure he has listened to just about all the amps listed. I haven't had the luxury to listen to any of the amps mentioned except the MC452 so I can't offer an opinion at all. I'm sure the same goes for most.

Me neither but that NEVER stopped me to put my 0.02$ in anything and everything...

:yahoo1: :roflmao:

I have heard their "cheap"100k mono blocks. I love them. But then again I don't have much experience in that price range. My personal top contenders would be

Octave Jubilee, EMM labs MTRX2, Zanden 9600mkII.

I've heard a pair of Halcro mono amps but forgot the model and I think they are out of business. So they don't really count. I have no love for McIntosch SS amps.

Very true, I think it's simply human nature.

Looking at images of the Tier I amps I am surprised how uninspired design many of them have. The Soulution, CH, Constellation, Goldmund, and the FM Acoustics, they all look like a big box with no distinctive or unique aesthetic feature. The D’Ag is a distinctive, but somebody went overboard with it.

If I’m going to spend big bucks for a Tier I amp, it better be good looking.

Fair point. I think Rowland makes GORGEOUS gear. Esoteric too. The Pass is nice too.

Accuphase also make gorgeous looking amps, Tier1 on looks and build quality alone.

Another interesting amp i heard for the first time a yr ago was the Triangle Art SS amplifier, i would like to hear more of it ..

While I do agree that pride of ownership plays a part in someone’s opinion, my earlier post regarding my PSA BHK 300’s to be included in Tier 3 was my comparison with my McIntosh Mc452. My thought was since McIntosh was in tier 3 then PS Audio should be included as well. That and the BHK 300’s have gotten very good reviews in the audiophile publications. :D

Either way I’m happy with my BHK 300’s no matter what tier they are in. I would love the opportunity some day to here tier 1 and tier 2 amps.
