A friend of mine has a love for top loader transports. His current spinner is a Bel Canto CD2.

We feel there might be better alternatives out there that will not cost an arm and a leg. Any recommendations? He's feeding a Berkeley Audio Design DAC via AES/XLR and he really likes what he's hearing, but hopes to squeeze out more performance. He's not the computer/music server type.

I love C.E.C. transports, but they are $$$$

Holy cow!

Never saw these.

CEC TL1-N BELT DRIVE CD Transport. Since its inception, CEC has reigned as the foremost among analog player manufacturers. The original TL1 CD transport was conceived as a challenge to the digital world, making full use of CEC’s legacy in traditional mechanical engineering.

During the playback of audio CDs, the rotation speed of the disc needs to be reduced gradually as playback proceeds outwards, in order to keep its linear speed constant. In most cases, a spindle motor handles this velocity adjustment. Most CD players and CD transports are designed with a direct-drive system, which places the motor just under the turntable and drives the spindle directly. A relatively large motor is needed to ensure adequate velocity adjustment, making it virtually impossible to be exempt from signal distortion caused by vibration and electromagnetic noise from the motor.

In order to improve the quality of the audio signals, CEC added a stabilizer to the turntable to increase its effective mass and inertial stability, making it possible to use a smaller motor located away from the spindle, and have it drive the spindle with a belt. CEC also designed an indirect belt-drive system for the pick-up, considering the pick-up motor a similar source of noise.

Based on the ideas above, CEC has spent the last 17 years devotedly developing belt-drive CD player/transports. Combining the latest digital data transfer techniques with the tried-and-true abilities of the belt-drive player in providing audio reproduction free of motor noises, the updated TL1N CD transport offers an unprecedented beautiful, precise and deep reproduced sound.

As a staple of the digital age, the TL1N features multiple digital outputs including CEC’s proprietary “SUPERLINK” system, AES/EBU (XLR), COAXIAL, and TOSLINK (optical).
Of particular note, CEC’s SUPERLINK system, which transmits audio signals and synchronization (clock) signals separately to minimize encoding/decoding jitter, has evolved into a multiple-cable system using high-quality 75Ω BNC cables, adding further polish to the CD transport’s essential role of accurately conveying the information recorded on a CD.

The TL1N’s outer casing features a modern and organic curved design as well as high-quality 30mm aluminum boards, which add to both its visual appeal and structural hardiness. Its smoothly curved surface randomly dissipates external vibration from speakers and such, improving the TL1N’s resistance to noise over the original box-shaped TL1.

The TL1N uses an advanced switching power supply with an integrated AC line power purifier, providing stable power to its motor, servo, display and digital circuitries.

CEC TL51X BELT DRIVE CD Transport. The latest incarnation of the original and famous TL5100 has some new features and updates, including:
CEC Super link capability, Toslink, Coaxial, and AES/EBU outputs. All new toroidal power supply, surface mount technology, and some updates in the drive system including softer suspension.
This would have to be the bargain of the century, great rhythm and timing, combined with dynamics and a very analogue sound, reminiscent of a Turntable. Straight out of the box this transport would have to be one of the best under 5 grand! Comes in Silver Mink finish.

PRICE: AUD$1690.00

not sure what your friend's budget is Joe, but if he is open to used, I would buy one of the older Esoteric spinners. If there is one thing Esoteric does well, it's transports.

Thanks Cyril. Definitely under $10K and probably more like under $7500

There's a dCS Verdi CD/SACD Transport on Agon for $5K. Worth it?

Joe... Why doesn't he try some different DACs?

He's kind of old school that way but LOVES the BADA (Berkeley Alpha) hooked up directly to his Dartzeel 108 (my first one). He loves swapping cds and has no desire for a computer/server. He want's no tubes in his system. He's a member here and not crazy about posting (smart guy).

The biggest model is the TLO-X, this is my friends transport with the Jadis d/a converter in his system.

Glad to see that i am not alone, one box cd player & redbook cd,s KEEP IT SIMPLE SYSTEM.

You also might look at the Naim CDX2. It's not a top loading per se but it has a very cool hinged door arrangement that you open and then put your CD in like a top loader and then close the door. It's a hair over $6,000. It is a CD player but has a digital out.

That's a great idea. I'll check it out with my friend.

ps I see the amp in your avatar. It that a Border Patrol? VERY nice!

Or a used Simaudio. There was an Andromeda on audiogon for less than $6 and I think final price on that was over $15.

He can still find the ad with a search.
