Top and/or most expensive speakers ....

I saw some statement speakers from top companies on the list. I also saw some pure money grabs and very dated designs. Caveat Emptor to those with an extra million burning a hole in their pocket. :)

Seriously, didn't see any Rockports. Very impressed by the Rockport Lyras.

I never heard several of the brands shown and maybe we all unite and can build a model the world has never seen...wait a minute we’re audiophiles, it would never get past the forum...

I haven't heard them yet, would love to hear your impression.

Dave,

My consultant-dealer recently became a Rockport dealer. He started with a lower priced Rockport Atria II earlier in the summer and moved up to the Lyras in August. For close to a decade he was a Magico dealer, and I even went to the Magico factory with him while it was still in Berkeley. I've heard the range of top end Magicos (at least all of them which were under $500K). To me the Lyra beats them all in its overall musicality. I was entranced by the sound, from CD's to 15ips 2 track 1/2" tape. He has always used solid state electronics - Constellation for the past few years and still has the top of the line Constellation amps and preamp, but found with the Lyras that the new Doshi tube electronics are a great match, with the total cost of the preamp and monoblocks about half of the cost of a Constellation preamp.

If you are looking at upgrading to the Lyras, definitely worth an audition. I would go to them over the high end Magicos.

Larry,
Thanks for the response. My dealer ordered his Lyras and they should arrive any day now. I really want to hear them but am afraid I'll buy them. I remember being told the enclosure is completely inert and sounds like a black hole. I really appreciate you describing the Lyra's musicality, that and dynamics are what I'm after. Andy has used Doshi in his room before and my dealer said it sounded really nice. I like my electronics and doubt I'll change for some time but in this hobby, you never know.

Heard them both in Munich (Magico M6), same electronics (Soulution). No contest, the Magico were superior in every possible way. The Layras had no bass to speak of, and sounded muted in compression to the M6. What you probably liked was the tube set up. Try some on a pair of Magico, see what you think.

No problem that you prefer the M6 to the Lyra but the way you describe it makes me wonder if the Lyra were set up optimally. Also, what speakers do you currently own if I may ask?

Fair enough but I think Magico/Soulution pair very well, not sure about Soulution/Rockport. Superior in musicality or resolution or both to your ears?

Even if i had the money
Even if they played well
I would never buy the Hansen Audio Grand Master or the Magico Ultimate III because they are too ugly :P

I agree with you about Soulution/Rockport being a less than ideal pairing. However, a Soulution/Raidho pairing, for instance, is phenomenal. VAC Statement/Lyra would be a very special pairing indeed.

Couldn’t agree more with you Ken ;)
