Top 5 Monitors

Jock, how did you feel those 3 speakers compared?

Looks like after all, you landed on D5's, but stuck with Raidho. Liked Raidho's sound best, but couldn't get satisfied with monitors?

The Raidho's sound best when out from the back wall, but are not side wall picky. Too close to the back wall does
complicate the bass issues.

To get any depth from the Q1s, you need the same space from the back wall - not for the sound per se but for imaging it's critical. And they need more space from the side wall than the Raidho's.

I had Q1s and the Raidho D1s at the same time and used an ARC Ref 75, Ayre MXRs, Dag stereo amps on them. At the same time, I also had the Wilson original Duetts.

I liked all 3 actually. But they all sound different. I love how the Raidho's convey the emotion of the music, so I would have to give my favorite to them. I am the first to admit that the Raidho's are a flawed speaker in that the mid bass has a spike that just won't work in some rooms. I have always had a bunch of windows in my listening room and windows let bass out of a room easily. So my room hasn't compounded the issue. Bottom line, I have learned to tame the Raidho bass issue.

The Magico is certainly the most true to frequency response and depending on the person, that can be a little analytical/sterle. But very accurate.

The Wilsons are somewhere in between. BTW, if your speakers need to be up against a wall, the Duette II's are designed to do so and do a really good job. I have never owned a pair but have listened to them a fair amount.

I LOVE monitors and really wanted to like the Q1s. I bought them with a Constellation stereo amp. Got a price I couldn’t say no to. Lived with them for close to 4 months and never warmed up to them and sold them after 4 months. Just my opinion obviously.

I personally could never recommend them.

I think the T&F Sun was mentioned. Not entirely sure whether it was this thread though.

And in the meantime the Sonus Faber Guarneri Tradition have gathered further stellar reviews, most lately in March in Stereophile.

I bought the Sun’s to compare to the Art’s. The Sun’s performed well but they are around half the size of the Art’s. The Art’s are better than the Sun’s in every aspect and punch way above their weight.

Would like to assemble a list of recommendations of what you all consider the top 2, 3, 5 monitor speakers.

Two parameters:

1- mortal budget. if it's over 15k used/20k-ish new, let's leave it off the list. well, maybe I guess mention it but it's not gonna make my short list, at least

2- high WAF. needs to be modern and fit a stylish home décor; ie. a large wood box won't cut it, doesn't matter if it sounds like Diana Krall is sitting on my lap and singing in my ear.

I currently use Amphion Argon 3s and consider them excellent. However I've been told, and sort of intuit, there are better to be had to get more out of the rest of my equipment. Maybe they'd make the list, maybe not; I don't have enough frame of reference. And sure I'd love to go with another full range - I loved my Aerials - but it's not an option right now.

Some I've read about: Raidho c1.1, Magico q1

What else ya got?

I would check out the products from Legacy Audio, they have two speakers that would be right up your alley. The first would be their Studio HDs and the second (an upgrade) would be their Calibre speaker. Both can be had in multiple finishes so the WAF factor is high...There are two dealers in Fl, one in Palm City, and the other in Lakewood Ranch. I'm not sure where the cities are in relation to you, but it would be well worth the trip to audition them.

TAD ME-1. I was blown away by the price // performance ratio of these in Munich. Just awesome. I own the TAD CR-1, so it may be that the sonic signature makes sense to me and I am just drawn to them, but if you get a chance, give them a listen. They seem to hit all of the Requirements of the OP.
