I wandered into a room on the main floor of Axpona this year and heard an incredible sounding system, turns out it was Thrax. The first I ever heard of them. What a first impression, I was thoroughly impressed. Thrax is now available in the U.S.

Oh my...now this is a room I would love to spend a day or 2 in...swapping the Thrax Pre with the Koda...listening to the differences...changing the power amps...

Then swapping the Trenner & Friedl speakers in & out with the Thrax speakers...

He doesn't play fair for us mere mortals does he Rob?

Sure doesn't...every piece of equipment in the first photo is on my "most wanted" list...sigh...

As are the T&F speakers...

Not sure about the drapes, but everything else....:vistory2:

Hi Marcin,

I just read a review of the Thrax Dionysos and Heres and was quite impressed by the similarities in circuity design to Grandinote:

- pure class A design
- both use a typical tube circuit
- no overall feedback
- no capacitors in the signal path
- use of high quality output transformers
- both use only two output transistors per side

The difference, however, is that Grandinote uses only Transistors and Thrax a hybrid design.

Reading both reviews in Mono Stereo and Hifistatement of the Thrax, I could perfectly recognize the sonic signature of my Grandinote that I like, so I'm pretty sure I'd also love the Thrax!

How would you compare the Thrax to Vitus (another brand that I highly respect)? Did you try the Thrax with Gauder speakers?

Hi
Thrax electronics sound more analogue, organic and warmer than Vitus, but Vitus mono blocks are much more powerful than Thrax, so everything depends on dedicated system and room.

With wich set-up did you hear Thrax?

Speakres: Tidal Piano G2
DAC: MSB Select II with all the bell an whistles. Was about 150k euro DAC
Amps: Thrax Heros Mono
Source: Aurender X100 I think.

I suspect the lack of a decent pre amp killed the sound.

I agree, even a good DAC with a good variable output stage cannot substitute a preamp in a top notch system.
