This is regarding audio forums. I think I am opinionated, when asked I will tell you, and sometimes when not asked if it's topic related. I never mean to be offensive. I assume most understand opinions are subjective, even same gear, results may very depending on other associated gear, room, etc. I also assume, to a lesser extent, that most realize we all hear differently, have our own opinion and taste as to how music should sound, want it to sound, our own experiences to draw from. I also feel for the most part, if intensions are good, that opinions are good. For example, if I put it out there something didn't sound good or work well for me, maybe it did for someone else and they can explain how they got their result or where I might have gone wrong with mine. Also, if others become familiar with your opinion/tastes, it could help you some day in the future if you need a recommendation or help.

Now that's me, how do you feel about reading others opinions, especially if you see it doesn't agree with yours? Are opinions good, divisive and need to be restrained? Where would I cross the line?

Aren't the forums really about sharing opinions?

I would rather read others opinions than reviews. I chuckled to myself about the Alexx thread. Funny that no one asked any of the members if they've heard the Alexx's and had any opinions. RITMO and I auditioned them together. You know what they sound like? Wilson's. Surprise! If you like the Wilson sound, you will most likely love the Alexx's. Ditto for just about every speaker brand out there. There's a house sound for sure.

You know what I think? I think forums like AS are a more valuable tool today than magazines. Who would you trust more - 10 members of AS or JH? Just look at MusicFirst's $20-30k integrated suggestions thread. Great ideas we can all learn from. Ultimately however, trust yourself first, second and last. At the end of the day, you only need to please yourself.

Forums would suck if there was a universal opinion.

I try and formulate my recommendations toward an individual's preferred sound. Tbh this is a change from me years ago, but also eliminates the "recommend what you own" which is so prevalent today.

I also think some combos just work and believe in synergy for a host of reasons.

As Mike said above, I tend to trust many recommendations or opinions/descriptions on a forum like AS than one Reviewer for a Magazine that's sole purpose is to make money thru readership and Advertising, of reviewed products.

And Bryan, I have always valued your findings, viewpoints and recs as long as we have known each other. And in general I learn something here every day.

as the saying goes, opinions are like a-holes everyone's got one :)

one caveat about giving opinions on web forums greater weight over professional reviews--and it depends on which professional reviewer-- is that many come from 'philes armed with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. a lot of what I read is just more audiophile dogma that's regurgitated over and over on other forums and suddenly becomes fact. over time you get to know which regular posters have really paid their dues so to speak, been heavily into the hobby for decades, knows music and collects a lot of it and has A LOT of experience with A LOT of different gear.

I have my own personal vetting process of who's opinions to take seriously and in who's I read for entertainment value and those (very few) I choose to ignore.

I don't mind opinions, especially if they are based on experience. However, sometimes an 'opinion' is just out of loony land, and that does irritate me.

my 2 ct.

we all hear different - so it's obvious we have different opinions on hifi components.

it's about dna, experience and expectation about the sound we would like to hear.

you ask 10 people what they hear from a specific sound system and you get 10 different opinions.

that's fine. noone is right, and noone is wrong.

i like this forum for its tollerance and (even better) respect for different opinions. good vibes.

I totally agree with Tube-VDS.

I frequent the AC forum and there are a quite a few nasty people there. I have posted several equipment reviews and I realize that they are totally subjective and also system dependent. I don't mind at all when someone disagree's (and I expect it and respect it) except when they get nasty about it.

Agreed Andy, for the most part. But when common sense and laws of physics (science) get tossed aside then I hit the ignore switch .........

I really enjoy reading what others think about equipment I've auditioned and its always very interesting to see where opinions converge and also where they don't and why. Sometimes its very funny and I don't exclude myself from entertaining others at times! :-)

It's just so important that people are writing in a positive manner, and not saying" I'm right, because i am right". I enjoy reading peoples different opinions, even if I don't think they are necessarily right.

I'm still young in age and experience, so I am just trying to suck in all the information that i can get :)
