Thinking about a new Volkswagen - TDI, GTI or Golf R ? ....

Hi Joe

I bought a VW GTI DSG just before Xmas. Absolutely love it!!

After 15 years of V6 Nissan Maxima sedan's ( the Infinity model in the US ), it was time for a change.

Surprisingly plenty of room for my large 6ft.1 body. The Merc A series was too small and the GTI killed the more expensive C series. Plenty of power with excellent fuel economy and not too expensive.

The adaptive chassis control with comfort, normal and sports allows you to drive sedately if you like or in true GTI mode at the click of a button.

I am sure the R is even better

I feel like a 20 year old speed racer again.:snicker:

Highly recommended:D

Hi Joe-

I test drove the GTI a few weeks back- I currently own an Audi S5 w/ DSG, so a bit unfair. For me, the 4 cylinder 2.0T that the GTI has isn't fast enough. It's quick, but not fast if that makes sense. Lots of torque, but not really smooth acceleration. I did enjoy the way it handles- more direct than my car perhaps. The interior is fine for its cost and you get lots of nice features like push button start, infotainment, and heated seats all for under 30k. I wish power seats were an option though. I told the dealer its Golf R or no go for me- its much faster and has the upgraded interior parts. If you TrueCar it, I think you can get one close to invoice in some areas now- so just wait.

Also, VW is notoriously bad for reliability (my Porsche dealer said they are hands down the worst of the three VAG brands)- and the new GTI is now made in Mexico which makes things worse. The Golf R is made in Germany and uses better parts- to me its worth the 10k.

Darrin,

I was looking through an old thread and you posted a photo. Absolutely beautiful. Red is my favorite color but can attract too much attention. I happen to drive briskly :D

Oh yes!

Keith,

Thank you. I understand. I am kind of spoiled with reliability right now. I have to see what 2016 R deals I can get, otherwise I probably won't go crazy.

Joe- the great thing about the 2016s is you get the huge infotainment screen that VW currently isn't putting on US spec cars. The current version is really unexceptional.

Yes, another reason to wait.

CDLerner:

Yes, both R and GTI have the same small screen currently. The big screen is supposed to come in 2016 for both!
