Thinking about a CD player, any opinions of these?

Thanks. How much I'll spend depends on how good deal I'll find, I might spend more for some much better player if I find some amazing deal (I'm talking about second-hand devices). It depends on brand new from store vs. used. It also depends on my first dillema: integrated + player - or - power amp + player with built-in preamp. Then there's a possibly big difference in price, here where I live second-hand components are sometimes much cheaper than in the US, UK or Germany. The same component in the same condition can be 2, 3 or 4 times cheaper here. But not always. With ALL THAT in mind, I plan to spend something between $800 and $2200 on player.

Good point, Jack.
I don't like it. I got bored with Vincent, I have it for more than 8 years. All CD-S3 players including mine have two technical issues. 1) You can't quickly skip tracks, if I press << or >> quickly more than 2-3 times in a row, the player will just freeze for some 10 seconds. It's irritating, I never experienced that with any other player. 2) Sometimes after it's just been turned on, it starts reproduction with cca 1/5 of the regular speed. That happens maybe every 20th time. Sounds like you put a finger on a record playing on a turntable and then very slowly lifting it off. No harm done, I just need to stop it and then press 'play' again - but it disgusts me. Every time that happened I said to it (not loud of course) that I'm going to replace it. But when it plays fine - it plays fine. Furthermore, I compared a sound of Vincent (~$1200) with much cheaper Philips BDP3000 Blu-ray player and the difference was hardly noticeable, I was shocked to realize it. And last, I've read that they (in Vincent's Chinese factory) use "fake" parts which they put inside their so-called "high-end" audio components. Maybe CD-S3 has all the right parts inside, but nevertheless... JOB and Sonus faber deserve better, and anyway it's time for a change.

What is your total projected outlay for everything. Are you enamored with that DAC or even owning Job? Are you willing to start from scratch other than the speakers? Has Norman or anyone else said what the projected price of the Job integrated is going to be? I know what I would do with those speakers, but you plan might be different.

The price of JOB INTegrated is not known, but I don't concern myself with it, it won't be much different than the price of their current products.
(I have yet to define my future cables too, now I use Kimber for speakers and IXOS+WBT interconnect, but I'll change all that.)
So, like I said, it's almost sure to be
a) Sonus faber Toy Tower + JOB INTegrated + undefined CD player
or
b) Sonus faber Toy Tower + JOB INTegrated + undefined CD transport + VALAB DAC-X9 (or some other DAC in the future)
or
c) Sonus faber Toy Tower + JOB 225 power amp + undefined CD player with built-in pre-amp

I would tend to shy away from a used CD player. They eventually break with a lot of use. Give a listen to Rega Saturn, Cambridge Audio 840c , or 851c, Yamaha CD-S2100, Luxman, Marantz SA-8004, 8005, SA-14S1 to name a few.

Still think you should pick up a well built budget CD Player like a Marantz CD-5004 and use it as a transport for a good DAC or a DAC preamp.

Good Luck!

Larry

well built budget CD Player as a transposrt -- could that be TASCAM??

I thought abour Rega players, although I'm more fond of a Cyrus, but the thing is that I had quite a few Brit audio products (including Cambridge Audio player) and decided that my future system will be Brit-free. :) I'm not really sure about Yamaha and Marantz, I'm kinda not in a mood for them either, I don't know how else to put it. I'd love to have Luxman, but that's far from cheap.

Thanks Larry

I'm with Larry on this one. I own the Job 225 and it would be fine with your speakers. So I would look at a good DAC/Preamp like the Nuprime DAC-10 and a budget CD player or even one of the cheaper Oppo's. The Job amp also worked fine in my system with the W4S DAC-2. You just need the transport to get the info to the cable to the DAC. As to the price of the Job integrated I would be surprised if it was much less than $3000. At that price point there are a lot of options.

Seems everybody forgot a budget champ, the Oppo! I don't know if you'll find a good deal on those, but they do have a souped up "audiophile version", with better analog output stage and everything. I think that was $1500 when new...

The Oppo has been mentioned many times in this thread I believe.

Just to satisfy my own self I tried four different transports with my current DAC using the same IC and PC. Three CD players and one OPPO DVD player. I know others will tell you different, but I couldn't tell any difference in any of them so I just use the ones I like the remotes on. As I don't swap around on tracks that part is irrelevant to me as is "load up time."

I don't think the price will be that high. But just in case you're right, I should now just wait until the JOB INT is actually released and reviewed before I continue with this.

Opinions on CD players with built-in preamp that don't cost as much as Nagra? Opinions on professional (e.g. TASCAM) players in home audio system?

Oppo... is not cheap here where I am. I already have Philips Blu-ray player and I'm just in a process of buying amazing Onkyo BD-SP809 because I've found fantastic deal. So I'd feel kinda dumb to have third Blu-ray player in system with no CD player... so I don't think Oppo will enter my home any time soon, if ever. If I'm gonna get rid of Vincent, I want some real stuff. But thanks for the idea anyway.

Sorry, but I don't have a clue what you are referring to in terms of CD player with preamps. If you can give me an example of what kind of a device that is then maybe I could be more helpful, but I would't tie the preamp functions of my system into a mechanical device that is prone to break down. Much simpler to buy a Preamp/DAC combo and then just by the player of your choice to use as a transport. Same would apply if you buy the Job integrated or something similar.

As I suspected and hoped from the beginning, the JOB INTgrated will have the SAME price as all the other JOB components: $1699 :)

I am nearing the decision to purchase the new EAR Acute Classic (the new version of the Ear Acute 3). My dealer is giving me a decent deal and just saving until I have enough. I owned the EAR Acute 3 and loved it. I'll keep you all posted when it arrives, but could be a couple months. The EAR is the best digital I've heard, at least sounding as much as analog as digital can be.
