The strangest thing

Guys,

Last night when I sat down to listen to a record I went thru my usual start up process: confirmed firmware version, checked the menu playlist settings in my app and hit the standby button on my VPI Classic 2. Everything seemed normal until I went to lower the arm / stylus into the lead-in groove when I noticed only half of my cartridge was there....split right down the middle.

Hmmm, I double checked my firmware version and rebooted my app, my NAS and my gaming/music server and after re-associating it all and confirming I am indeed running firmware HW.3345.001c, what do you know....my cartridge was back in full. Whew, I though I'd lost my library again.

So anyhow, I hit the standby button again but nothing. The platter didn't start spinning. It was then that I noticed the belt went missing again. Damnit! I've seen this before with the HW.3345.001b firmware and found my belt under the couch last time. A quick check, and the belt wasn't under the couch this time. Must be a difference in firmware. Damnit! I decided to just go to bed and wait until Monday to call VPI. I went in to brush my teeth and what do you know, the belt was sitting on the counter in the bathroom. AH HA!....must be that the HW.3345.001c firmware has a bug. Cool, back to spinning records, I can sleep later.

After re-fitting the belt, I back-rev'd the firmware on my app (and downloaded and reinstalled the app this time for good measure), my NAS and my gaming/music server and after re-associating it all and confirming I am indeed running firmware HW.3345.001b again, I sat down to listen to music. Ahhhhh, glory once again. I'll just stay with the HW.3345.001b firmware for now as at least I know when the belt goes missing again that it's under the couch and easy to find.

Have any of you guys run into similar problems with the latest VPI firmware?

It's times like this that I wonder if it'd be easier to set up some kind of digital music streamer instead of this complicated vinyl thing?

:P :D

Mike.......Fantastic analogy. Not too far from the truth. It's not as simple these days as it used to be, yet somehow we eventually muddle through. Enjoyed the creativity.

Digital is a pain in the ass to get working and to keep it working. I just recently downloaded Roon after hearing how marvelous it is and I quickly dropped it. It won't even play back dff files.

Would it be presumptuous of me to assume the media giants pine for a day when all of this content we crave exists only on their server farms, sorry, I meant fluffly white 'clouds'. And the only way access it is via some rental agreement. IINM, some software companies are already following this model (Adobe comes to mind).

I have no problem with who ever in where ever they are offering a service . If it is your choice to buy in or not.

But controlling the market as goal I do not like at all. Also I have seen Candles last longer than some of these services. As some of you rightly pointed out a PITA to set up and keep running. In this day and age things and services you pay for should work 99.99 % of the time.

Geeky tech can be great repair Geeks not so much.

Mike - too funny! :D It's also sad, but all too often, very true. The Network Music Players like Lumin and Aurender have helped a little in this area in SOMEWHAT simplifying the whole digital audio thing, at least in contrast to the crazy early days CAPS/Mac's on steroids/guy who makes computer in basement and calls it a fancy name. I can remember those days when JRiver was crashing every 5 minutes or Windows would just stop working or the spinning wheel on the Mac.

Like MEP - I don't get Roon either.

Thanks for the concern guys.

No Mike, no more issues with the firmware since Saturday night. However, yesterday I did notice that I'm getting some studdering in the output which is likely from my aging 500gb Hard Drive. Thinking I might just bite the bullet and order a new 1Terabyte SS drive for it. I really can't stand that disc hunting / indexing sound when I'm listening critically and the new SS drives are not only silent in that respect, but also much quicker at boot up.

I'll be damned! Tonight I went to power up my turntable and after the initial boot up sequence, I got this flash on the screen..."HW.3345.001c firmware is corrupted, please reboot". WTF? Don't tell me the Hopped Up Gator software puked again....

I rebooted the drive unit and same error. Another reboot and things appeared ok. I guess Hopped Up Gator had a problem with my new SS 1TB H.D. purchased from CDW. I went into the VPI app on my iPad, clicked the Hopped Up Gator snapin and it was running famously. I then found that the HW.3345.001c firmware in the VPI app (Setup > Current > VPI > Turntable > Classic 2 > JMW 10.5i > Common) was back and it wasn't just my imagination after all.

The real bummer was that my dog got hold of my USB thumb drive that held the good HW.3345.001b firmware so I'll have to download the B version again tomorrow after I pick up another thumb drive from Walmart before I can back rev. I hope VPI's website is functional this weekend for me to get the download....

Damnit, and I was hoping to listen to some vinyl tonight.

Mike - this is a common problem with all turntables now due to the MZA (double MQA) unpack sequencing which conflicts with the firmware of all SS HD's.

Try a firmware reset back to the original HW.3345.000a. Hold down the power button, hop on one foot, must be the left foot, not the right, pat your head and rub your stomach. At the same time, have someone else at the back of the room hop on their right foot..

LOL...Put on the damn record!

My iPad has lost all connectivity with JRiver. It came back briefly last weekend for no reason, but it left again for no reason. Thanks to Dre, I use the gizmo remote to run JRiver on my iPhone over the web, but that is flakey as hell too and keeps dropping the connection. The usual cure all for all things digital is to reboot in order to get the ones and zeros back in line, but that isn't working either. Contrary to what some people say, digital is a giant pain in the ass and the pain never really goes away.

I love it when I walk into a room at a show and there is no sound. You see several people in a huddle with a look of consternation on their faces as they gaze at their digital gear and wonder why no sound is coming from their system and people are leaving their room because there is no point in staying. I see it all the time at every audio show I have been to. By contrast, analog always works and it sounds better too. If you want to have an audio show appearance with no glitches, play analog because it works.
