The SHOW - Newport, June 3-5, 2016

Joe, we're just having fun. What Keith and Rob said Is why I go, to reconnect with old and new acquaintances. Newport was no different than any other show, some rooms got better sound than others that's a given. I missed last year but prior years seem to have had a greater turnout both by exhibitors and attendees. It will be interesting to see if this show continues to have legs.

I thought last year's show was better than the year before, and both were excellent compared to RMAF (the only other shows I have attended this century), which is also excellent. I hope both these shows continue and continue with good industry support, because from a consumer's standpoint they are important.

If I had to guess, I'd say attendance was down this year. Seems after 5 or so years, this usually happens.

Sunday was a ghost town (and a pleasure). Next year, I might just come down Friday, skip Saturday, and resume Sunday.

Maybe I'll finally make it to RMAF this year - I always seem to have a conflict :(

Great seeing you, Keith! I'm glad you got in the EA/darTZeel room in time for the Zep session. That is forever engraved in my memory now :)

Since the tapes were gone yesterday, we had to make do with "Fool in the Rain". Unbelievable as well!

I didn't go through each and every room, and just hit a handful, but most of them had fairly decent sound, and the ones that didn't, I kinda expected them not to hehehe

Sunday afternoon was quiet indeed, and I was finally able to blast some serious prog (to counter the Julio Iglesias that was playing across the hall) on the Avantgardes...

cheers, and bring on RMAF!
Alex

Rob, the sound was much better overall last year. Not sure what happened. I began the day at MBL and the bass was way off and then an amp went down due to voltage - kind of started off the weekend on the wrong foot :)

Had a wonderful weekend of course with all of our friends and industry folk. That really is the main reason I go these days.

As far as music, had no issues playing my own stuff - in general, I'd say people asked me to play my music :)

Hi Keith,

You had mentioned that several brands of speakers sounded good to you at the show, care to share .....?

regards

Well, I did the show a bit different this year - i intentionally skipped some well known brands to hear more panels, horns, and others that I typically don't hear. So if you're wanting to know how the Wilson Alexx sounded, I'm the wrong guy (and I heard it a month ago in a dealer's treated room anyways)

To be honest, it was a refreshing experience for me hearing rooms like Perfect 8, Sanders, Acapella, Kii, Thrax, Avantgarde, JBL, Rockport, Cessaro, Spatial, Nola, Trenner Friedl, Evo Acoustics, etc. I look at shows to get a better idea of what I want going forward and to confirm my preferences. In general, I find too many hifi systems "closed in" and not effortless and many rooms indeed sounded that way.

So outside of Wilson, Magico, etc., if you have any specific questions I'll be glad to tell you my opinion.

None in Particular , I just remembered reading, where you had mentioned about hearing some good sounding speakers, so i was hoping you could throw out some names...

Hi KeithR,
What do you think of Avantgarde UNO XD?

I really enjoyed my time with them. Much more cohesive than prior AGs I've heard and the bass cabinet makes the speaker way more structurally sound. I wonder what you lose going from Duo XD to Uno XD these days- perhaps Mike can comment as well.

Meanwhile the Sanders demo showed how coherency can be a difficult problem for my ears.

Keith,

I've discussed this with the rep (differences between Uno and Duo), and the main issue would be the crossover point, and how much is covered by the midrange horn. In the case of Duos, the point is much lower, at 170Hz, due to the larger size of the midrange horn. On the Unos, with the slightly smaller horn, it's 290Hz. That way, some lower midrange information, like vocals, is actually covered by the cone woofer, and not the horn. And this could be detrimental, in some cases...

Of course, this is all theoretical, as you heard the Uno XDs, and they're cohesive, or "of one piece", as a famous reviewer likes to put it :)

Today I had the opportunity to play around with the Avantgarde app and dial the two woofer modules of the Uno XD, and it was a lot of fun! It's great to see how bass affects everything else!

Ron (the M&S guy) is building an entire room out in Beverly Hills right now- he said he's a year away from buying any gear :(

But he's going to have a Basis Work of Art TT, so gonna be sweet when its done.

Ron did a great job in his coverage, his sensibilities mirrored mine right down the line. The one speaker I'd like to mention that impressed me for the second time was the Analysis Audio Omega ribbons. I was sitting directly behind Valin and he had them spin one of the Peter Paul and Mary reissues on ORG, the sonics were sublime. I've owned Apogee Duetta Sig. back in the day with Krell and these were every bit as good (maybe better). Amplification was a combination of tubes and Class D. The front end was a VPI Avenger/Soundsmith strain gauge.

from Stereophile:

Seems like JV agreed on the closed in/dark sound that alot of rooms displayed this year.

that said, i really enjoyed both Cessaro and AG rooms- just not the appearance of the former :)
