The SHOW Newport (Irvine this time) coming in 5 weeks.
I have only been once, a couple of years ago and did not dig it. This year I found out that Spatial is going to be there and I've been wanting to hear those speakers. I mainly want to attend some of the seminars, so I decided to try to go and just do that. I won't need to waste time running around to rooms like I did the first time and I get to avoid (which I will do at any cost) the awful, stupid food trucks. However, for right now, I have not been granted the time off....yet.

Anyone else bothering to attend this year?

I will be there for the entire weekend, but I'm not sure why you are complaining. Newport is arguably the best show in the country right now and its 75 degrees and sunny outside :) Also, the new hotel apparently has excellent rooms for sound- it will be interesting how manufacturers adjust actually. Many of them have had the same room for the past few years.

Sounds like a real drag. I mean sun, music, wine, fancy cars and food. Who needs it?

This will be my first time and I am definitely looking forward to it.

It has to be more fun than CES and I always enjoy that despite its hassles. Richard Beers knows how to do a great show. Last year there were 110 rooms and this year is rumored to be bigger.

I'll be there. Most frequent show-goers have ranked this show either #2 behind RAMF or in some cases equal to RAMF, and that was in the old venues. Last year I had a blast!

My thing is that I am not into gear that much at all. The reason I went the first time is because I was in the market for a CD player and wanted something on the nice side, but realistic. In all 100+ rooms there was but one CD player and it was so far out of my ability I was blinded and couldn't see it. What really got me though was the music was far far too loud and I could not stand it. I had to wonder if everyone was stone deaf. In a few of the rooms I was pressured, I hate that, but it didn't happen to often at least. Most of the exhibitors I could visit were nice. They just did not quite understand me not being an audiophile, but that's ok. A/C was not working outside the rooms. I made the mistake of getting lunch at one of the food trucks (I know better now). I was getting really bored too.

That's why this time I was looking at it and was not going to go, but noted that Spatial is going to be there and I want to hear their speakers (this being the only opportunity I would have) and then I thought why not do something geared more towards my comfort and do the seminars and just visit the Spatial room and call it a day. I certainly was not going to go just to hear the Spatials. I'm still not sure if I can get off work to go at this point, but if I do, that's my plan. I just hope they don't play music too loud in the Spatial room or I won't be able to hear them and I also hope they have some complex music like full orchestra classical or jazz based Prog rock or something to demo with instead of singular simple selections that won't reveal anything.

I've always heard it was not as good as RAMF, but not terrible of course.

If you are into gear and cars, wine, food trucks (and used to listening at deafening volume levels), your going to love it, seriously.

If high efficiency speakers are you thing, there are many to be seen at Newport:

Avantgarde- the new little ones
Zu Audio
Daedalus
Acapella
Voxativ

Just to name a few....Volti, Cessaro, etc were there last year but aren't on todays list. Bring your own tunes- that's what I do. Can't remember a room that wouldn't play them.

I'm only interested in the Spatial Holograms because I could save for them in a period of 1 to 1.8 years provided plans don't get blasted. The other ones I have to assume are way beyond my abilities.

As for bringing own tunes, that's the way to do it, but all I can bring are CDs and it's unlikely there will be a player in the room, but I'd bring them just in case luck would favor the foolish. Plus it would be the only room I am visiting pretty much. Oh, I see MoFi will be there. Ok, I should probably drop by that room too, just in case, time permitting. That's two rooms now, I think that's about all the time I'll have plus the seminars, if I can attend.

My advice is hear them in your home before buying as you are not a gear swapper , you can't afford to get it wrong, "&", the speakers you have punch "way" above their weight! With the right pairing & set-up these speakers are good, so are yours!

Well, your absolutely right that I can't afford to get it wrong and the home demo is the ideal way to do it, especially considering that I am looking at them for my vintage system with the fact the the amp will be so completely different then what is used in a demo it would be the best way to really know how they will sound. However, that method is pretty expensive to me when you factor in about $50 to $60 shipping each way and a 15% re-stock fee if I did not like them and the fact that I am not even middle class nor remotely near the means of anyone here.
If I did like them, then no worries, but since I have to save up for them it would not behoove me to do a home demo if I could until I had enough to purchase them if I liked them.
I'm comparing them with a much less expensive pair of speakers and if they are head and shoulders above that pair, I'd start saving my pennies for them. However, I'm also not sure they will even work with my vintage amps, so I need to talk to the rep about that anyway. I know it's a tough call this time seeking them out now...next to impossible actually, but I figure taking this opportunity now would at least give me needed info if nothing else then I can decide if I want to hear them once I find out if they would even work with my vintage system.

Indeed, I am not looking to replace my main speakers in my current system for the very reason you state and more.

Music Director,

My comments were meant to convey the sense that there are a variety of attractions at the Newport Beach show that are not available at others. Personally they do not appeal to me. I drive a Highlander 4-cylinder two-wheel drive. I am not into cars at all. Cigars stink and my alcohol limit is one beer. I hate wine. So why did I mention those activities at the show? Because others do not share my tastes and may enjoy them.

Despite living alone in a home with a large yard designed as a peaceful retreat, I enjoy the energy of the show. Yes, all those wine-guzzling car and gear nuts can be fun. It is basically about attitude. I am a veteran of many years at CES so I know about "show energy" and I have learned to accept it and enjoy it. If music is too loud I leave the room unless the gear is something I really want to hear and then I request they turn down the volume. If they are playing a specific request for someone I wait until that is over before making my request. CES brings a different clientele and exhibitor mix so sound volume was not a major problem. Maybe there are limits enforced. I do not know.

But I understand someone having limited interest in the show. Your personal concerns are very legitimate. Much of the equipment is out of normal budget allowances and therefore only a curiosity. Shows are not the greatest places to audition equipment for a variety of reasons.

Some suggestions to make your experience more pleasant if you decide to go:

1. Load some tracks onto a USB drive. You will have more chances to hear your own music if you do that.

2. Check out the list of exhibitors to see what other companies have speakers in your price range. You might find some pleasant surprises. Maybe start another topic and ask for suggestions based upon your criteria.

I noticed that Emerald Physics will be at the show. They share a history and design commonality with Spatial. I would think that if you are interested in Spatial, the EP room would also be of interest.

3. I am not sure about your travel arrangements but if you are going to be at the show after hours you might be able to schedule an after-hours audition.

I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go.

OK, Subtopic.

Food trucks at Newport Beach-avoid or belly up? Any particular ones to recommend for or advise against?

Little ones *and* a big one :) We'll have the Duo Mezzos too.
As Keith said, bring your tunes!

I ate in one of the hotels last year, by the pool. Not bad. Same venue was good for a beer in the afternoon too :)
Parking was brutal, so I wanted to avoid getting the car out once parked.
But this year apparently the parking situation is much better, so it's probably better to jump in the car and go to a decent restaurant (of which there are tons in the vicitiny).

The food trucks are hit and miss. I've had a couple of fantastic meals and one stinker. Regardless of the food quality though the aesthetics are poor

Last year almost every room could play CD's, although that wasn't always obvious (sometimes your CD would have to loaded into a music server).

I see. I’m not a car nut myself, but I can appreciate classic cars, but would rather go to a car show to see them. I’m allergic to smoke and don’t like the smell of cigars anyway. I’m not a wine guy either and my alcohol limit is nil, nada, zero unless I’m cooking with it. Inside info: having been aware of this show for a few years and reading about it, note the wine, cigars and cars don’t get all that much attention. I’m kind of surprised they are still having that stuff. Maye it’s not much of a bother to do it, so why not.
I envy your living arrangement.
I’ve had to leave too many rooms because the music was far too loud and politely asking them to turn it down is not easy in that I don’t want to be out of my place and talking above that level of volume is impossible. I don’t mind other’s specific requests at all, in fact, I like that. I really wish more folks would make requests because there is such a diversity of folks liking different genres and artists. If your paying attention you may hear something you have not heard before and like it.
Bringing a USB drive is good in that it can save the frustration of us old school types of not wanting to haul vinyl around and the waning use of CDs, except that most vendors don’t really allow that and for good reason. It’s a very easy way to transfer viruses and malware. While it’s true that most folks would not knowingly do such a thing and I myself can guarantee all day that my files are clean, it doesn’t mean much if there is something I don’t know about. The reverse is also true in that the USB drive you brought can get infected with something.

I’m only causally interested in speakers for my vintage system at this point and have heard a lot about the Spatials, so I am curious about them seeing that they are a bit closer to reality in price, which is rare.

I can only go for a day if I get the time off. (I have plenty saved as I never take vacations, but it’s month-end, so certain stipulations are present). I’ll look at the list again, but I think I would have a better time focusing on the seminars and severely restricting my gear exposure because it’s rather difficult to do both in one day.

Then don't come dude. honestly, i'm not sure why you are coming on an audio forum to complain about audiophile candy stores (shows) and how they decide to run a show.

Well I only ate at one, but for me personally it's a safe assumption that they are pretty much alike. The one I ate at that I suggest avoiding was California Grill.
