Jack, I created (started) this thread with you and your daughter in mind, without knowing anything at all about the music you two like.
Right now this is in suspension (from me, my time), till I truly get serious about the New Music I like (and not so new).
- The first post with two videos of Habib Koite; that I like very much so, but it is nothing new, only thinking about your daughter in particular, as she might like that style of music.
- The second post with Buika; is also not new, but in spirit to all the members here @ AS.
- The third post (with five very different music videos) is simply a tentative and not a reflection of what I necessarily like, and nothing new either. And as a tentative it can help into another direction all entirely. ...It's an essay, a test, a way to look at what some people might like or not.
That's my way of proceeding, sometimes, in order to discover New Music; not just for me, but also for you, your daughter, and everyone else.

Liz Longley. She told a story of how songs just come to her and she can write 25 songs in two weeks. Amazing voice. Amazing song writer. Amazing talent. Educated. Beautiful. And she gets zero air play. I don't get it.

I think the more I think about it and I think that I am more a new traditional music lover. 
What can I say; I love Classical music, and Jazz and Blues and New Wave and World.
...But then me too I was once 1-10-20-30-40-50-60-years old.
So, I like/d almost eveything really. ...Except about everything else.
The young people with an acute taste for great music (more the exception than the norm); they too like Classical and Jazz music.
But, some New Age Electronica music is a lot of fun coming from a pair of high-end loudspeakers, two high-end subwoofers, a top-of-the-line ultra high-end sound system (dual solid state mono block amps, dual mono/stereo preamps, and two hi-res CD/SACD DAC/transport/players). ...Add some smart DSP and DRC and EQ to that mix and you can have the best dancing parties in your town! ...And your room is appropriately large and decorated for that (with moving and color changing light's system, a mirror disco ball, a bunch of flat panel HDTVs on your walls, and a bar).
Nowadays kids use a Pono player, or an iPod, or a MP3 player. ...Or from their smartphones.
I know some who play the piano, but not too many of them, unfortunately.
This thread is still going, and I'm going to explore all avenues, so watch out!

As someone who held a significant position in radio for a time with a lot of hash marks and as someone who was a volunteer free agent scout I can tell you with great assurance that any person or group with amazing talent in any one of those areas you listed or all of them will almost always never get air play on any major station. Detailed reasons are still a mystery to this day and I've been on the inside like I just mentioned.
It's kind of gone with the times though, Back in the day, major talent would get scouted and signed and airplay was a first step, of course back then it was also Pay to Play or Payola. These days it's still done, but in a different way so it's disguised.
Also the industry is totally corporate and profit driven, nothing else matters. Unfortunately, the other thing that is the same is that the artist get ripped off by the labels. That's why now days many artists put out their own stuff or post it on-line or only sell their works directly. (That's always a good thing).
The labels and such do not want talent, they want pre-fabed, computer generated, lip-syncing individuals that will sell units and be of interest to non-thinking individuals of all ages. In their minds true talent is for stuffy old snobs who still live in the dark ages and therefore won't sell, so why give them air time.
Working at a jumper station (gateway to big stations for those who want a career in radio) it's a independent station who does not answer to corporations and is public, but certifies individuals for applying to big stations. We could play whoever we wanted to play. I was invited to have my own show on the Rock side of the building after my time on the Jazz side, but while I could have introduced some new truly talented artists to people, I had to decline because I did not want my own show as I had/have no interest in being air talent (DJ) which is considered a major promotion, but I was much more talented as Music Director and Associate Producer (and file clerk -what I started as before they discovered my natural talent that I didn't even know about).

Nice Mike. I had never heard of her until now. Yes, very good, a true talent! I can tell she writes a good bit like Tori Amos does for example, the songs have a life of their own and just present themselves to her and she writes them down. I'm going to check out more of her works. Thanks for posting this.
