Well - this is several years old but ... Artsy Desktop Speakers Made of Newsprint and Dryer Lint - Electronic House "You’re earthy friend will love them too, as they are specially made with recycled newsprint and dryer lint." So at least you've got some of the materials for a new pair of speakers.
There was a cheap pair of these on audiogon a few weeks ago. The $20,150 model for $8k.
Liked it so much the audio addict in me immediately enquired about the upgraded SQ version (but, beyond "more better", no clear indication of how it improves on the base model and no return policy on the SQ). The stand is the opposite of a Sound Anchor -- surprisingly lightweight. Clever base design allows more than adequate oomph from the bass port in the bottom. Plays all my preferred genres brilliantly. Compared to the AGs, much more forgiving on the scuzzy lo-fi/indie/alt rock as well as more coherent on the orchestral. They're horns, so of course they do jazz. On something like Holly Cole's recent Qobuz release, Montreal (Live), the AGs really prove their mettle -- just night and day how much more present she sounds with the AGs compared to the Fleetwoods. Some of it could be room (the two rooms sound very different whether or not music is playing), could be ancillaries (the AG's get the superior sources), but I listen to very little jazz vocal anyway ... (actually, tend to prefer vocals like Thom Yorke or early REM that are more sound than lyric -- guess I prefer music to message). But considering the price delta, the Fleetwoods' ability to play nice with all genres, and the fact I can carry them anywhere in the house (or out to the car to take to someone else's house) they're pretty amazing.

Thanks Joe.
