LOL! The only reason the car companies are doing anything is because a newcomer came in with better tech and majorly crushed their market cap! If Tesla never came around they’d still be pushing the same junk.
Tesla is no doubt here to stay, but I don’t think other car manufacturers are turning out junk. Some yes, but most, no. In my review, we compared SUV’s costing about the same as the Model Y. Frankly, the Model Y was more “junk” than the Porsche, BMW or Audi we’ve since drove.
I just hope Tesla begins to focus more on the things that matter for EV’s, like build quality, range and less on stupid stuff. I love their process for buying. Simple. Easy. Brilliant in that regard. That being said, I read constantly about Tesla owners complaining about build quality, stuff like the intermittent wipers not working properly and on and on. Taking away the gear lever for example is another idiotic idea. The automobile has been around for almost 130 years. I don’t recall ever, anyone saying “gee, I wish we didn’t have a gear lever.” Even when screens and tech became ever so prevalent in cars, I don’t recall ever hearing someone say “gee, they should put the gear lever on the screen.” I’ll be honest, at my stage in life, I have all the tech I can handle. My patience for tech is running out. I lived it 24/7 for nearly 30 years in my previous life. My laptop is from 2009 and I avoid using it as much as possible. The lack of tech is one of the reasons why I love my GT4 so much. It has nothing. Christ, not even proper door handles! Nothing on the steering wheel. Not even memory seating. No memory anything. No keyless entry. Nothing. It’s a true sports car that you have to actually DRIVE. My truck on the other hand has a giant screen and every technology known to man. Adjusting anything is a pain. It’s also so distracting and frustrating.
I do half wonder if the guys at Tesla spend half their time coming up with good ideas and the other half just sitting around thinking up stupid things like moving the gear lever to the screen, the yoke (called “the Joke” by the reviewer) and the regenerative braking (for me, I know you love it) and farting horns, dancing reindeers, video games and whoopee cushions and other silliness. I’m certain that all appeals to the TikTok/snap chat millennials, but it’s not something I would ever want or consider.
And you know what really scares me? The fact that their software updates can fundamentally change the way you interact with the car. I really don’t like that idea. King Elon calling the shots on how I drive my car? Oh no…no thanks.
My hunch is that in 10 years, the EV market or Hydrogen market will be dominated by others. Tesla may make a nice car for a certain segment of the market, but I don’t think they are a serious car company. Sorry, I just don’t. They seem like a bunch of adolescents, albeit brilliant adolescents, sitting around trying to be very different and seeing how much silliness they can add to the car before pissing everyone off. Sometimes being different is good and their focus on the core elements like charging stations, range, etc has really paid off. Other times, being so different is not good.
That being said, I’m patiently waiting for the Tesla Robin. [emoji6]
