Tesla Model Y Test Drive

My wife is on her second Tesla (Model 3 and Model Y) and I just reserved my third Model S. Like any piece of audio equipment, personal preferences make a big difference. You did a smart thing by driving before buying to find out how you would react to the car's features. I did the same with the Model S. I immediately sold my Ferrari and never looked back. The car is a combination of enthusiast's sleeper supercar and practical family sedan. I've never had any service issue on any of the cars, only tire replacements. Before I retired I had a nasty commute. The regenerative braking was a godsend. I can't live without it now. As they say, YMMV. Best of luck with whatever choice you make. There are no bad choices.

Model S over a Ferrari , interesting choice :)

I know more than a few who go back to gas , one in particular did similar with his M-Car for a model S and went back to gas after his lease was up, said it bored him to death, but he does do track events and an occasional auto -X .

Funniest story was a cross country trip in a model S , apparently running the heat shortens battery life by 50- 70% , i can see heavy city commuting over short distances as being ideal for sure , most i know who really like Tesla’s and are on their 2 or 3 rd buy for the self driving feature , apparently nothing like sitting back and watching traffic when commuting to and from the office ..!

Options are great and I'm sure many will have one sooner or later its the forced mandatory EV Agenda is the problem IMO, as to gas prices, 5.00 + a gallon will speed this along nicely, now imagine what the Electrical charge rate is gonna be in the future for electric cars ..!

We went back to gas, not because of any performance short comings of our model S p100D. , it was the range ( actual range at highway speeds) and charging locations on roads other than interstates.

A few years ago my area experienced a power outage for 4.5 days after a nasty ice storm that damaged many power lines.... I was able to get in my car, start it and go over a few towns over to get some food and necessities. Thank god for natural gas stove and two gas fireplaces in the house or would have been frozen in the middle of the winter. Slept in a jacket at night... One can have a few jugs of gasoline in the garage (with fuel stabilizer for longer storage than one season) but not sure what I would do with an EV in that situation...
 
We’ve had a couple of power failures for several days over my lifetime here. I wonder if our fairly local Superchargers maintain power or not during future outages.

I remember with Hurricane Mathew, we had NO power for 6 days, then we got it for 3 hours before the pad mounted transformer 3 houses down which was flooded in the storm surge finally died after the power was restored., I can just see attempting to charge an EV with the power going off and on for days would be a total bummer. I do know, once we were allowed back home by the authorities, our LP Weber came in handy as did our Honda 3000 generator and a couples of coolers full of ice. But the humidity was horrid. The next year we put a whole house 18kw Generator in along with 500 gals of LP buried.

I had a Generac natural gas 17KW or 18KW, in my previous house. I’m thinking it was a Honda engine inside, don’t recall. I should look into installing one again.

I don’t live in California but it seems very problematic in some areas with the outages..
 
I love the fact that brakes last 100K miles and more with the regeneration feature. That’s an awesome feature to me.

I had to go to my car to see if that option is in my model 3 menu screen. I'm not sure what software version that is on. But, my screen just allows "hold" or "roll" for braking. There has been at least five over the air updates since I bought the model 3. This is one of the big advantages of Tesla. You don't have the same car you bought six months later. It's similar to a iphone. It does the same job. But, there are constant updates and add on options.

Mike you may want to check out Jay Leno's take on the 2022 Mercedes Benz EQS. If you want range and massaging seat.

The EQS is amazing and maybe in 10 years it will be for me. I have a ‘21 Porsche Cayman GT4 as my daily driver and a ‘21 Dodge Ram 1500 limited for when we need to pull the trailer or use it for work. I have a deposit down on a C8 Z06 for over a year now. I’ll wait for the reveal on October 26th, check it out and then decide to get the C8 Z06 or a 911 992 GT3 Touring. I love cars. I read and watch everything I can get my hands on. It’s a problem!

But this is an SUV for my wife. I’ve told her to just get a car, but a lot of women like to sit up high. So far, admittedly being very very biased, I think the ‘22 Macan GTS is the way to go. 434 BHP. Amazing sport like handling and braking. And lots of buttons! LOL. Hey, she makes good money, she can afford it. [emoji6]. Come to think of it, what am I still doing working? [emoji14]

Never having driven a one pedal Tesla, I am curious what the driver does if an emergency happens and you need to 'slam' on the brakes.

It has a conventional brake, aka two pedals, and you can brake anytime. Because of regeneration and software control, many hardly use the actual brake pedal.

The brake peddle is still there. I was taught 100 years ago or so when I started driving to feather the throttle and learn how to coast a lot. The regenerative braking turns that upside down a little. But I think one could get used to it.

But as I dig more into the Tesla model, I just don’t think it’s for my wife. Concerns about break downs and getting just any place to work on it, resale complications, etc. I need to do more research into selling a Tesla. I get the feeling you won’t be just walking into the BMW dealership and handing them over the keys and driving away in a new 5 series. But I could be wrong.
