Seems not only is there debate about the sound of the analog reissue vs. the original pressing but also the SACD vs. the hi-Rez download. Well this shows one of the problems in making such comparisons.

It's a good thing I checked my list of recordings before hitting "complete my purchase."

I almost bought an unneeded second copy of the SACD!

I'm getting better at this.

My albums and CDs of that title sound no better than all my older Led Zeppelin albums and CDs.

Maybe someday I'll get back to it in search of a better master.

So what exactly are you saying Bob? Everybody who hears is a difference is wrong? That there is no difference between an original, pin rimmed Island, US A&M, or later pressings and the digital copies? That no difference sonically between hi-Rez PCM and DSD? I don't care if it's good or bad but it's impossible, if just cutting level, for all pressings to sound the same. (Not to mention all things being equal, the earlier the pressing, the better the sound.) You can't hear a difference on your system? I can assure you that the Cat Stevens though overrated sonically IMHO, is clearly on a different level than the best LZ (Piros, Ludwig, etc.) pressings.

All my Cat Stevens and Led Zeppelin albums and CDs sound like pure crap; that's what I'm sayin'.

I was in a much better stance when I was in my teens; smoking hashish and all that jazz of being young.

I guess all my copies (versions) they are simply no good, and it's ok now with me because I listen to other stuff anyway.
Upgrading the old stuff is not always worthy when you're into the newer stuff and other music styles.
For example; The Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, ... I rarely listen to my albums and CDs now.

I love(d) Cat Stevens music, and if some people are into the latest and best remasterings from the original pressings (tapes, acetates) the more power to them if they are still listening to it.

Life's just too short to live in the past. :)

* I'm just talking, in an audio forum, about music. ...Today, right now.

Agree the AP Reissue of T for T is utter Crap-- My UK Island 30 yr on Version--leaves it in the dust

So to sum it up in one sentence, you posted to rain on other people's parade.

Ok, so which vinyl version do I want?

Thank you for injecting some sanity back into the thread. All things being equal, the original pink Island label. But they're rare and will set you back at least $300 or more. And you don't know what shape it will be in :(

The point was that it's impossible to make any meaningful comparisons between the sound of the original release and reissue (s) unless one knows the source. For instance, the AP 45 rpm LP reissue of Art Pepper Plus 11 is THE only one cut from the original master tape. Not the original LP, the CD, SACD or any other release!

For those who suffer from reverse premature senility, take for instance the recent Daft Punk release. For whatever the reason, they did two very different mixes for the LP and CD with the former being distinctly inferior to the latter. So that complicates matters even further.

So how does one find out the best releases on a certain media? I've been eyeing some Steely Dan Aja LPs and there are a few versions, but don't know which version is best. Any websites/forums that have this info or discuss this regularly?

Myles, I don't want to talk about the OP, but about the content. ...Cat Stevens (T for T) from various recording sources and listening mediums.

If you want to talk about content, start your own thread. Otherwise, stay on topic for once.

So Myles, for those of us with average bank accounts, how does the AP version, which is supposedly cut from the original analog master tapes, compare to the version you spoke of above?

In my system, the AP among other things a little edgier and missing some information. But it's better than the other intervening
TFTT reissues --even the one done in the mid-'90s by Tim de. If you want the analog version and don't want to pay big bucks and be assured of good surfaces, then go for the AP.

Myles the one I heard on your system was that the pink label. ?
I have the cd, flac download and now the dsd from acoustics.
The odd thing is acoustics is supposed to be for the analog master and a new mix. The mix sounds very much like the flac or close anyway . But there is one odd fact about ten seconds in there is a drop, out on both the flac from HD tracks and dsd from acoustics. And I do not think either one was as good as what you played that day .
