There I was killing some time browsing through Ebay listings. Gosh knows why, as I never buy anything, but its like window shopping.

I came across an H-Cat 12B pre, and the opening bid was reasonable...and no one had bid...and it had 2 days to go. So I decided to do a bit of research, and find that there is quite a cult following on these H-Cat pre's. Now they have something called a Wavefront control. The technical people out there read the description, and say bullshit. But the funny thing is when they go to hear one, most seem to report back that its a great sounding pre...even though they don't believe in the control. I find a lot of posts people saying its one of the better pres they have heard. So I was intrigued.

I watched the auction till today, and no one has bid. So with 3 minutes to go, I place a bid, if it escalates I was going to drop out. But no one bid, and I won the auction. So for $450 somolias I get a pre that sold for $3000 in the early to mid 2000's. Shape looks to be extremely nice, and its an attractive piece in general. Built on that thin chassis that I have seen Counterpoint and Threshold use.

So I am really looking forward to hearing this piece. I plan on hooking it up to the N.E.W. DCA 33 and seeing what I get. I hear so many nice things in that amp, but the top end is a bit distant. Perhaps the gain structure on that amp requires an active pre, and not the passive PVA I currently use. Many aspects of this amp is on par with my 300B SET amp, and if the top end can be improved....well it could easily be on par with my Electra Print gear. But it would have 4 to 8 times the power, and open up a lot more possibilities for speakers than the SET.

Hopefully the seller honors the auction, and gets the pre shipped out in a timely manner. I am really intrigued with this one.
