Taiko Extreme

how many takio extremes are in the wild? assuming the USB PCIe card manufacture is outsourced -- it would seem selling the card separately to be a relatively easy business opportunity to undertake (just order more) once the small universe of existing customers have been quickly upgraded ... not to mention a means for takio to address the horrible server inequality situation.

:D;)

I don't know how many Extremes are currently other there.

My guess is that the USB card is specifically voiced for the Extreme. I don't know how well it would just plug and play in other servers. I do know that the powering of it isn't standard. Most USB cards can be powered internally or with a 5V power rail. That is not the case with this card.

Again, anything I am saying is pure conjecture.

Mike, what power cord are you using your TAIKO Extreme with?
Having an Shunyata Everest, I was wondering what would be the fitting power cord... a V14 digital as Caelin recommend for pure servers or more like a Sigma NR v2?

Maybe you tried already a couple...

Thanks!!

This is just a biz decision. They ousource the cards and can order 50, 500 or 5000 as easily.

If the quality of the card should shine in any server build. Not saying that it will be nowhere near as good as the Taiko - but you should get a noticable uplift in the sound quality none the less.

Since it’s in the AudioQuest room, we use an AQ Dragon Source. We use the V14 Digital on the Aurender in the front room (the Shunyata room). Oh, and I ordered my Aurender N30 yesterday for that room. Silver.

Okay, so sounds the V14 digital is in any case a good starting point.

Regarding optional AES/EBU: Can be skipped when using a Omega USB I guess... and put the funds eg in a Sigma NR v2.

@N30: Very nice! ... is there already an MRSP?

Hi Elberoth,

I am stepping way above my level of expertise here, but it appears, as can be seen in the pic below, that the Taiko USB card has an additional umbilical connection that appears to be specific to the SGM Extreme, which may limit its plug-n-play adaptability to other servers.

I may also be mistaken, but it is my understanding that the Taiko USB may not even be compatible with all previous SGM server versions.

Mike, I just watched the video with you and Jay discussing the Taiko Extreme on YouTube.

Good video, mate! Well done.

That's the power supply for the USB card. I think I read its +12v and +5v

I was hoping Taiko would sell it to non-extreme owners but they didn't want to. Its understandable that they want to push for more extreme sales with the new card.

Here are two more based on the same controller chip and same reference design. I have heard none, so don't know how it sounds but I am planing to get one and compare with JCAT XE USB that I currently use.

Here is the Taiko

Carlos,

Yes, I have already discovered that. It would require some DIY job to fabricate a cable. Not sure about the connector on the card itself - it looks like a regular 4-pin CPU power connector.

Can anyone confirm that ? I have a spare 4-pin CPU power line in my server, fed from linear PSU.

It may physically be a 4-pin CPU connector but a standard CPU connector powers with 2 12V+ and 2 12V-. I believe the Taiko connector is 12V and 5V.

Okay, Mr. Mike. You can't do this to us. How does the Taiko Extreme compare to the Aurender N30(SA?)?

Our next step is upgrading the music streamer/DAC. We currently have a Linn Selekt with Klimax DAC, a great "all-in-one" DSM that combines the streamer and DAC, but has no storage. Nothing beats it, IMHO, for the price.

We just had major medical bills, so it will be a while before we can spend money more wisely on audio equipment, but we are looking at:

1) Linn Klimax with Organik DAC (top-tier "all-in-one" DAC/Streamer): approx. $40K.
2) Taiko Extreme
3) MSB Premiere OR Reference DAC
4) Playback Designs Dream DAC
5) ... something from Esoteric DAC
6) Berkeley Audio Designs DAC
7) ... maybe dCs Rossino with clock DAC

So the question is: may we assume that it is always best sonically to go with seperate DAC + Streamer? If so, then of the DAC of choice (is it your Taiko or MSB?), what STREAMER do you prefer? In other words, what is your "dream combo" of DAC and Streamer?

Any feedback appreciated (hope this did not step on any toes).

You can always call me! Posting publicly causes butt hurt!

Did Taiko switch to their own OS in place of running a version of Windows 10?

No, the run a modified version of Windows 10 LTSC. The also utilize Process Lasso which allows one to assign specific tasks to specific processers, as well as other OS tweaks.

What advantage does running Windows as the OS versus a Linux OS?

You would have to ask them that. I don't know if it has to do with being able to run Process Lasso (which I don't believe runs in Linux), or something else.
