Synology Box RAID configuration

For home use I just pick their native proprietary default raid type, (SHR).

I went with Raid 5. I was told SHR is a mess to recover, if your NAS dies (not the HDDs, but the NAS itself).

I have four 4TB WD Red HDDs installed.

Haven't checked, but does Synology allow you to do an on the fly RAID conversion without data loss?

I will be configuring my RAID tomorrow with 5 4TB Reds using SHR. I'm using the RAID box for all of our wedding photo shoot images. Not for music files. We have several years of weddings on many external USB HDs. Getting a bit out of hand.

I have 4 Nas server 3 are used for business. All business Nas are running raid 10, each Nas is 8 drive bay. Music server is Raid 5. Later on im going to buy the SSD drive Nas systems which are a lot smaller. This will run mirrored drives. Raid 10 is highly recommended but a lot more expensive to run. My Nas network backs up to one another over night. In case of a fire, I have remote off site data recovery.

SHR is not really recommended. But it's your choice.
