I've just received the latest & most powerful Microsoft Windows Surface Pro 3 with Windows 8.1 Professional preloaded.

I went for the biggest spec, i7, 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD. The 2160x1440 touch & stylus display is a beauty. One Note really works. Pen based computing has come of age.

Now given that it is battery powered, full blown Wintel machine with a standard sized USB3 port....... It is begging for JRiver to be installed. I have a Wireworld Platinum Eclipse G7 & a McIntosh MCD1100 (upgraded USB) just waiting to be tethered....

Not only that, the Surface Pro 3 has a mini display port too. There is a mini display port to hdmi cable for this beast if you want to use it as a home theatre source. There is also a USB to Ethernet dongle.

Now, you might be thinking, only 1 USB. YES, 2 would of been better. But don't be so dismissive. It has half a terabyte of built in storage. And if WiFi streaming from your NAS won't cut it, there is always the optional docking station:

•3 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, 3.5mm audio input/output connection, Mini DisplayPort
•Security lock slot
•Innovative design leaves the Mini DisplayPort and USB 3.0 port on your device available for use when docked

Wow. I haven't come across another Surface user. I really like the new Pro. Wish I had it. I have the original RT, it is very limited in function, so when I need more power, I employ the remote desktop feature to control my main PC.
The Pro should make for a awesome music server. Just hope that yours doesn't have the overheating problem some users are getting with the i7 CPU.
Congrats. Let us know how it works out, I'm a computer consultant by trade.

Rod... so far so good with the i7. The warmest it got with the short time I've played with it today was with 4 concurrent CCTV video streams when the fan came on. Barely warm at all. It has a fan, but you wouldn't really know. The airflow is about all that can be heard, barely if you really listen hard. I guess you can control the fan with the power settings. Given the CPU power, coming up with a dialled down power setting would be the way to go with playing a JRiver stream....

I like the Surface 2 RT machine too. If Office is all you need, then that machine is also a joy. Inset one up for the mother in law only last week. Did play with the original Surface RT for a short while. It has come along way & is gaining momentum on the competition. I'm in the business too.

This forum is awesome in portrait mode given its resolution. As for battery life, it kills anything with an "i" in front of it. Amazing for an i7!
