Summer Amplification?

Mike, How much heat do they produce? I see the power draw can reach 1500W. 43 pounds is acceptable. Champagne--yuck!!! Made in CA. :)
Silver or black is a $500 option. I love the black myself. Not much at all. Idle is lukewarm.

I looked at Coda then forgot. Heat and weight if I remember correctly.
Coda Class A/B do not run hot. You can actually choose how much bias into Class A which changes the wpc. I can't remember the weight it was llighter than my Levinson 532h by a good amount.

I understand your view on Class D, I saw a Jeff Rowland made the PTA best of list for power amps, FWIW Class D though

I'm not sure what's in it for reviewers several "magazines" really seem to like and push it. I haven't heard every one out there but at this point I am in agreement with you.

Thanks,

I will revisit Coda specs. I could probably get a loaner since I am only a few miles away. I tried a JRDG Continuum integrated many years ago. Big yawn. Not sure what the current offerings are.

Agreed. Demoed. Didn’t get it.

Many reasons to not go there. Lack of power (112W). Seriously, who rates an amp at 112 watts? Coudn't get to 125? Granted they might sound fantastic on the right speakers. But there is no guarantee they can handle the very high imedance Sound Labs exhibit at low frequencies. Small company. I think any amp I would choose would hve made a big name for itself and be from a company tthat is a major player.
If you have Sound Labs and you want to go with low heat you will have to run some kind of solid state amp that (in most rooms) is rated 800 Watts into 8 Ohms.

As you know the speaker has a 30 Ohm peak in the bass. Effectively that means divide the 8 Ohm rated power by 4.

That is also why our class D didn't work so well on that speaker- it would have effectively been about 25 Watts. Simply not enough power!

I just checked. My oil-filled space heater consumes 1500 watts on the high setting. 600W at low and 900W at the medium setting. Constellation power consumption is 1500W max. That is 25 60-watt light bulbs. Of course I would not be operating at the maximum capacity but I still have a hard time estimating the heat output.

Not super light, but my McIntosh is 150wpc. Conservative rated. It is cool as a cucumber. But it is 75 pounds :(.

Unless Dizzie has an electric company that charges crazy prices, it seems it would be cheaper to turn the air conditioner thermostat down to make up for the heat load of his current amp than to buy a "summer amp."

Looks like he's in CA . That explains it all.

You’ll be looking for an amp with minimal iron and heatsink weight. That means a Class AB design (since you haven’t heard a class D amp you’ve liked) with a switch mode power supply. A bridged class AB amp may be the ticket. 4x the power off the same supply rails.

There are a bunch of them out there in the pro amp sound reinforcement and touring market in the 2kw to 4kw class but the ones I’ve heard don’t sound very good.

Maybe somebody makes a HiFi version that sounds good, dunno.

Dizzie

Why don't you reach out to Terry London and Richard Willie from your publication as they have reviewed multiple Coda amplifiers. If I remember correctly Terry even currently owns a couple of them.

I just bought Marantz PM10 integrated amp. They are closing it out since they came out with the $15K Model 10. I love it. It has better sound than my Pass X250 amp (105 lbs and a lot of heat) and my BAT VK51SE tube preamp, 50lbs and even more heat than the Pass. The PM10 is a dual mono design, class A preamp, each with its own power supply and balanced. Takes a while to burn it but now very musical, tremendous sound stage with great air and transparency. Great detail and micro detail. Totally clear sound
