I had never heard of this artist until Mike noted his last album "A Sailor's Guide To Earth" today. I played that album and as I posted elsewhere there are a few throw away tracks (at least for me) but other are very good. So I started reading up a bit about this guy. I was stunned to find out that this album was up for Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammy's against. He was nominated alongside Adele, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Beyoncé, four of the most potent forces in pop music of this (or any) decade. Commercially, the chasm between them is vast: Simpson sold around a hundred and fifty thousand copies of his newest and third record, “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth,” whereas Adele’s “25” has sold twenty-three million. I guess he is kind of country but he according to a article in "The New Yorker" Simpson himself is something of an outlier, even within his genre. “A Sailor’s Guide,” which won Best Country Album, is his first major-label release. In 2014, after singing the word “goddam” on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” he responded to detractors with a statement on his Facebook page, scoffing at the machinations of corporate culture. “Also, since I’m self-funding/self-releasing my art instead of shooting for ACM awards and taking it up the ass from the music row man, I have the right to write and sing and say whatever I choose,”

Here is a pretty good track from the Grammy's where he performed with the Dap Kings.

I like him and several of his other albums have quality cuts on them. Kind of following the same path as Allison Moorer (Shelby Lynne's sister) whose opinions about the industry exec's has kept her on the outside looking in despite her talent.

FWIW, there are numerous musicians in many genres self-producing and marketing their music. Bandcamp has a lot of them, but there seem to be quite a few not even bothering with Bandcamp, and only selling at their concerts or from their own Web sites.

Welcome to the club...posted him up a year or two ago ;)

Jason Isbell is his amazing contemporary as well.

Sturgill ex excellent. Metamodern Sounds In Country Music is also an excellent album.

Jamey Johnson is another excellent country singer - His album the Guitar Song is wonderful.

I have been giving "Metamodern Sounds In Country Music" a try. This one is much more "country" than "A Sailor's Guide To Earth". Not sure this one will stay in the rotation.
