With strong encouragement from Vince at MSB, we’ve added Stromtank. The 2500 mk2 with its digital filtered inputs and ability to take the entire front end and preamp off the grid is huge!

We’ve run this all day from full charge and still only managed to use 20% of the battery! We have the Taiko Extreme, VAC Master Pre, MSB Select II (two chassis), MSB Digital Director and Pass Phonostage plugged into it - all turned on.

The sonic benefits are immediate. The bass, the micro detail retrieval, the backgrounds, separation, everything!

I check their website. Stromtank 2500 has battery capacity 2100wh. You said the front end only consumes 20%. It means the front end consumes around 420wh. You said the system is up all day long. Assume it is 10 hours. That mean the mean power your front end is 42w. Don’t think the front end uses such little power. There is something missing. Are you sure you run Stromtank off grid? Or when you say all day long, the system is not playing any music. It is idle.

My 7 box Esoteric stack uses 100 watts in full flight according to the power meter on my PS Audio regenerator. Quite remarkable.

As for the Stromtank, I find Mike's observations interesting. My Stromtank dealer said Shunyata was a better match with Esoteric gear. So that is what I did.

I have been tempted to try the Stromtank in my set-up but I am still trying to prioritize my next upgrade and not sure how that falls. Previous demos (those were in-store) aligned with Mikes comments.

Ah. Ok. That means with full charging, you can listen 12 hours straight without being on grid.

The S-1000 would be a better fit for my front end power demand. I really would like a single box to take care of my power conditioning rather than the multiple boxes I'm currently using in an ad-hoc way.

I think S1000 maybe more suitable for one component. I would go for S2500 to power front end. Like all power generators, you want plenty of reserve not just enough.

For most people, the 1000 is ample. We will likely get a couple of 1000’s for the other rooms which have less gear on at one time.

But I honestly am shocked at the sonic improvements. I didn’t know what to expect, but Vince was spot on. He said the revelation came at a show when no matter what they did, what they tried, the power was just awful and “peaking his meter”. I know he brings a line noise measuring device to every show. The good folks at Stromtank loaned him a 2500 mk2 with the digital outlets and he said it was “game over.” He now uses it at home and everywhere. He’s been urging me to bring them in for months. Damn, he was spot on!

Recommendation was taiko and digital director info the digital slots for now, but when my Stromtank power strip shows up (the SEQ-5 - launched at Munich), I’ll plug the Taiko into one and the three MSB boxes into the strip and the strip into the other. Yes, this is the approach Stromtank and MSB recommend.

In your application are you using aftermarket power cords (Shunyata, Nordost, etc) from the sources to the Stromtank? Does the Stromtank eliminate the need for a power distributor (Shunyata Everest, Denali, etc)?

Excellent questions! We are using all Nordost Valhalla 2 because the Stromtank is in our Nordost room. The Stromtank has noise suppression technology when you’re on the grid and no need for noise suppression when on the battery since that’s the purest.

In practical terms, you will listen all day on battery and charge at night.

Not that it happens a lot but how cool would that be to be able to listen to your system when the power is out. Plus being able to charge your phone or tablet.

Ha! I never thought of that. In Florida, especially summer, that’s a real possibility.

Also given the frequency of brief power outages during the summer months it can help to save sensitive gear.

That's why I bought s whole house back up generator.

Mike, with the Stromtank in use, is the character of the power cables connecting gear as strong as if they had a connection to the power grid?
