Although no longer a player in terms of being able to move the needle for companies with reviews or companies advertising, the name STEREOPHILE is still powerful.
If they got their act together and made their content model more with the times, and what readers are looking for, they could certainly rebound into a serious player for sure.
If they continue doing more of the same, it does not matter whom they bring on for writers, they are simply delaying the inevitable.

What’s even better is being able to audition components in your listening environment. Over the last 10 years that is the only way I buy. No in home audition no deal, I use the industry rags and YT reviews as a very low bar to benchmark from. Guess that is why I am not jumping from rig to rig looking for the next best thing. I like what I like and I know what I like. I also have not been to a so called audio/industry event in years. I have 3 dealers I work with and occasionally will kick tires at their locations in TX, TN and IL.

I agree. It does not matter who does a 'review'. All that matters is how it sounds in your room in your system and that is such a HUGE variable.

If you don't mind saying who do you work with in IL?
A good friend who was a dealer recently passed. I used to do most of my home auditions from him. I have also auditioned with option to return. My last audio show was year before last. I love the shows not to shop just to geek out. I've been to Axpona so many times I wasn't so hyped this past year. I do like to keep up with what's new and to hear gear I haven't heard before.

Unfortunately, many (most) companies do not have an in-home audition policy. Many have a return policy but usually with some type of costs involved. Also, many of us have no dealers in easily accessible range. What options do we have but to read about products. Many times, it is the only manner of discovering new products. A great example is the HumminGuru ultrasonic cleaner. A review of the product lead directly to me purchasing it. Honestly, it is fantastic and works like a champ. I would not have known of the machine and probably would not have purchased any ultrasonic cleaner if it were not for the review.

I have enjoyed shows also (a couple of times). Not so much for listening comparisons but more for getting the look and feel of various products. I know anything I hear at a show will not sound even close to the same in my home. Therefore, I always keep in mind my needs and desires the couple of times I have gone to shows, and try to picture and imagine how an item that catces my eye might work in my environment.

That's where you find a "Great" dealer that will.... two of the dealers I work with are not in Texas where I reside.

When I lived in Mobile, AL, other than a couple of home theater installers, Best Buy was the only option. There was some presence in New Orleans, and Atlanta. So Suncoast, and Mike, was my go to.
Now, in Seattle, there are at least 3 qualified brick and mortar stereo companies. One, not quite a mile away from my house sells mainly Naim, and ATC. They do have a nice room of used gear that is fun to putter in. One, about an hour away, sells a mixture of stuff, including Audio Note, Devore, and some custom tube gear. They also will do repairs on tubed gear. They have some used, and repaired gear for sale. I have not visited the third as of yet.

Fremer turned me off with a tour of the Hana factory. He was a condescending ass in the video to the Japanese who graciously welcomed him. He was just too snarky.

He's not usually that way. He might have been jet lagged or having a bad day. He's been nice in every situation I have seen him in.

Wow, I haven't been on this website for a while and it looks like I have been missing out on some things.
I speak as a Californian and as someone who was raised Catholic, so I "confess" that I do have a phobia about religions. I'm glad that you left the west coast, since we don't need any bigots, religious or otherwise! I have been to Texas several times and I also have relatives who have lived there for over 10 years and are looking forward to the day when they can leave. So, I know something about the state.
"You need to be around "tolerant and inclusive people" so you moved to Texas? People in Texas seem to be tolerant and inclusive only if you are white and Christian. So I guess you feel right at home! Birds of a feather and all that.
