Hi There,

I’ve just become the proud new owner of a $20 Stenocord Model D that’s in particularly good condition.

I’m curious if anyone knows anything about some of the connection points on these. I’m specifically curious if I can swap out the connection the Mic/Speaker/Controller (apparently it does all three with it’s very proprietary 12 pin connector) as the handset has a beauty male connector but the female connection point has been removed from the chassis for some reason.

I’m generally just curious about repurposing derelict electronics that still work. This thing has tubes and some sort of magnetic tape (or rubber tube?) reader in it. Would love to turn it into some strange crude audio unit.

Happy to provide more info, but I do not have much 😅

Can you even get the plastic sleeves to record on any more? My dad a slightly more modern version of that to dictate his medical reports into for transcription.

As to the electrics, you will probably need to take the hand set apart , and trace wires from microphone to the pins responsible, with a digital multimeter.

By the way, at least the one my dad had, functioned by cutting a groove into the plastic sleeves, similar to a vinyl record groove. Then it could be played back in a similar fashion.

I found a plastic sleeve that comes with another of these units on eBay but I’m not sure to be honest!
