After years away from audio as a serious hobby, I'm bringing an Advent 300 receiver and Large Advent speakers back on line. The speakers & receiver are getting some attention from experts with each. Once they're back, I'll be making decisions about the right path from there.

The years of paying for braces, educations and weddings for our daughters will now give way to some new investments in audio. I've got vinyl, way more CDs, but love the convenience of digital. While I like the fact that the hobby now allows decent sound at really low investments, I'm eager to get advice about finding my way back into audiophile gear.

I look forward to reading more about your gear and opinions. I like what I've seen here so far.

Welcome back! A fine place to get back into the hobby, essentially where you started I am guessing. It's funny or coincidental that I am reading your post when literally 20 minutes ago I got home from an audio show and purchased one of my favorite old LP's, Mofi's Original Master Recording of James Taylor's Flag album. I wanted to listen to it from a period-correct amplifier with a nice phono stage so I plugged in my fully restored NAD 3020 and connected my Technics linear drive turntable to some Trenner & Friedl Art monitors and my oh my, just lovely music is being made! Sometimes vintage really is better. Takes me back to the days I started going to rock concerts. The first one was Bad Company in 1974 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. Poco and Kansas opened for them. And at the time I too had Adent's driven by my Technics receiver which lighted up in day-glo green! Oh the memories. Welcome back!!

Thanks very much. What a great album find. And, yes, college years with Advent...too many years ago!

Welcome 6Sigma ,

Your post reminds me of a time long , long ago ,My first hi-fi speakers in the early 70's were KLH model 17's , i saw a very good pr on eBay recently and was almost tempted to have them , i may still do and give them to my soon college bound daughter ...

My college and high school daughters have no interest in speakers larger than Apple earphones! Good luck getting your daughter into audio with real speakers :-)

My daughters(3) haven't seen or heard any system that is more important than the decor in their homes. Their husbands have man caves! :dunno:

Welcome back! I jumped back in myself abut 15 months ago. It has been fun re-learning this crazy hobby and trying many different pieces. Enjoying the heck out of it!

6sigma.......The Advent 300 receiver is a sleeper. It sounds much better than it looks or at its price. The moving magnet phono stage and the FM tuner are quite good, too. I owned two Advent 300's at different times many moons ago and enjoyed my time with them. I also owned two pairs of the large Advent speakers that I stacked and ran as stereo pairs for left and right channels. Again, damn good sound from a reasonably priced speaker. You are reentering the hobby with a couple of good choices.

Yes. At one time I had 3 pairs of the Large Advents and two of the receivers. I drove the stack with one receiver and the original Adcom 400 cube amp for a time as well as with a McIntosh amp & pre. Four of the Advents eventually gave way to a pair of Maggies and the arms race began.

Welcome back to gear-land. Just make sure whatever you get moves you!

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for reminding me what all of this is all about. I've had and/or listened to some systems of moderate cost that were incredibly involving. I've also seen/heard $100K+ systems that were meant to be seen more than heard. The fun comes when you get involved in the music! Many thanks.
