Speaker placement and setup question?

A nice carpet in Patrick's room will also contribute to a more relaxant sound.

And by all means Patrick; your project of building shelves on both side of your fireplace is a good one. ...And they don't have to be fixed permanently (attached) to the wall, but simple/solid audio racks that you can easily move anytime, anywhere.

Question: Is the fireplace going to be used ; and if so with wood or gas?

It's a wood burning fireplace but I just mounted an LED TV over it and we live in Florida so I doubt it will never get used. The rug should be arriving this weekend. I agree with you about using free-standing audio racks. That way I will have the ablitiy to move them and the speakers around to get the best sound.

You're right; in Florida it doesn't get cold much.

I was asking mainly because if you are going to burn wood in that fireplace and build permanent shelves on both sides, the audio components inside those shelves would be subject to some dust from the ashes.

After a year living in that house, and that you realize that you indeed don't need the fireplace, perhaps you can close it and transform it (metamorphose) as something more decor friendly. ...Just a suggestion, as I would be inclined myself to do if it was my home.
* Or, simply put a low horizontal audio/video (20" high or so, by roughly 60" wide) rack in front of the fireplace, put the LCD LED HDTV on top of it (more at eye's level now), and your center channel speaker inside the center inside top shelf, right below the TV, and angled up towards your ears.
I don't know if you are a handy man (I am myself), but that's a project's possibility. ...Or you can simply shop for one.

And yes; free standing audio/video racks (you can put other decorative stuff in them too, like flowers or ceramic/pottery musician figurines in their top shelves if you aren't using a turntable; just as an example) are easier to move around to find their preferred spots for both your wife and yourself in a decor and practical friendly way.

Patrick, I don't know you, obviously, and I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction. I go with the flow of the thread, and with my heart.

Bob...I appreciate and like your suggestions. I think what I'll end up doing is buying a free standing a/v rack for now, that way I can keep my options open as far as equipment placement goes. I had not thought about getting rid of the fireplace but that's definitely an option. I think it's unlikely that we'll get rid of it even though we won't use it but I'm glad you raised the idea. Thanks for all your help. I'll have to post some pictures when I finally get it done.

Bob...you're too kind. I really do appreciate all of your valuable input. It's nice to have such good, helpful and friendly people on this site. What a great community. I look forward to your advice when I get around to upgrading my stereo. Hopefully within the next year.
