I never seem to know when firmware gets updated, so I thought I’d start this thread to keep up on it for everyone here.

It appears that on 11/23 there was an update released. The update number is 2017.08a. I just updated and reprogrammed all my settings.

I’m interested to see what improves we’re made.

Do you know what they changed in this firmware update?
One of my issues with the firmware updates used to be that you had to reenter by hand all your previous configurations/settings. After doing that once or twice I started rethinking whether the update was worth it.

Not sure what was updated.

Yep, I spent 20 minutes re-entering everything...even though the update said it wasn’t resetting the settings

Firmware has been Bryston's biggest weakness for me in the past with their BDP file players. While I sometimes think of getting an SP3, your firmware experience cancels that thought for me. :)

Boy, I am so used to seeing phone app upgrades that show in plain English what has been changed, that the sometimes obtuse engineer-speak language of the notes are mind-boggling.

And then I read this:

“Warning Notice:
Firmware releases starting with 2017.02b are not backward-compatible with older units manufactured before 17-Feb-2017. Such SP3 units, running older firmware will not normally accept firmware revisions issued after Feb-2017 of type mpfs22. “

So does that mean (in simple talk):
Don’t bother updating your old units because it will likely not work?

I’m not sure what to make of this...

I had a click/pop sound when HDMI was engaged from my Oppo. This update fixed that.

It’s a fantastic piece of gear. I’m always thinking about improving other areas of my set up. The thought to replace the SP3 has never crossed my mind. It’s an incredible processor

Last month I sent my fairly old SP3 unit to have the new HDMI board upgrade. In the process I got the newest/latest firmware installed and a complete checkup of the unit.

The upgraded board allows the SP3 to pass 4k video and HDR.

Bryston's service and support are excellent!

I am using separate devices to process the video (Oppo 205), do room correction (Roon/HQPlayer), and a separate DAC to handle hi Rez audio including 512DSD. The SP3 with its numerous inputs and options (like 2ch bypass) and now 4k pass-thru integrates very nicely with the rest.
