Shindo shot of the day

Thanks for the great answer. I have never thought about the price difference between orig blue notes and old 78's but you are bang on. Old rare 78's are insanely expensive.

Especially when you consider that you are usually only getting 2 songs per record!

You summed it up nicely Kevin. For me listening to 78s is a bit like audio archaeology. They are snapshots of an event that would be lost any other way. A lot of the music is really cool too (although some is pretty dire). I use a Sentec Phono pre with a Gray arm and various cartridges to play my 78s. I am only on the baby slopes compared to the real collectors, I don't have deep enough pockets.

What other cartridge would you recommend ?

I wouldn't, really. I like the ortofon and emt. Truth be told, I used a zyx 4d with a Shindo phono pre and found it quite nice.

Edit: full disclosure - other than the phono pre, the zyx was in a non Shindo system and on a Graham phantom / Brinkmann bardo. It was the enjoyment of that Shindo that brought me back to the brand.

New shot / old shot on a cluttered day. Shindo and *gasp* Tannoy and *gasp* digital. :)

Same system about a day later after I shipped Tannoys to an overseas buyer.

Again, apologies for the low quality pics. TT #2 still under (re)construction at this time.

This system lost some of the oomph of the Tannoy but, overall, was much more suited to my taste.

Updated view (not a great shot...color not accurate...oh well...)

one last....again, color is way off and prior to setting up the table.

Nice looking system. I love the 604's and would love a chance to hear them. What plinth is that - it kind if looks like a lingo lab.

Thanks. The 604 are great. Perfect for my room. The plinth is a Woodsong / Harban, my second. I had one for my thorens 124 and was impressed with the quality and price and Chris's ability to accommodate requests. This plinth....not so much. Although it is beautiful, it was not properly fit to the 401 motor size and I *totally* question the value of these plinths at the current prices which I understand to approach $4,000. My plinth was a bit cheaper and built totally according to my design for a small footprint plinth with an articulating armboard. I'm totally happy with the outward craftsmanship. It is quite beautiful. But...no...I couldn't go this way again. With a 124 I think that the plinth is of lesser importance. With the garrard, if one spends huge money - and to me 4k for a plinth seems large - one should be getting a plinth designed by someone with experience in using materials to squeeze performance out of the table. Chris - and many of his competitors - have been doing this for a few years, fueled perhaps by the post Jeff day garrard series in 6moons that blew the door open on these tables to audiophiles at large. In short, I'm just not convinced that you (generally speaking) get what you pay for. I definitely did not as I had to hack mine into being able to accommodate my table.

Definitely not ideal by the sounds of it. A shame, as it looks really nice.

If I may, here is my Shindo shot of the day... well, there are Shindo bits involved anyway.

It's pretty for sure. And well built. Other than the most most important factor - fitting the table! But, really, $3,000 - $4,000 for new ones? I'll pass. YMMV but one could get one of those cheapie plinths from Moldova on ebay, pay a woodworker to cover it with veneer, and save at least 2-3k. Will there be a performance difference? I'm skeptical. I really am. I've owned and built all sorts of plinths for the 124, 301 and 401. I doubt that the difference is of a magnitude that supports the price. I'd pay more attention to proper rebuild of the table, proper arm and cartridge match and proper alignment.

I'm only talking about plinths with which I have experience...I've never had the privilege of spending a lot of time with the ligno, the Shindo or the 501 plinth from loricraft. I know well that the plinth makes a difference - I had Terry Cain make me a skeletal plinth. Rest his soul, he was a wonderful man and a hifi artist. But that plinth was a sonic disaster. Again, just my opinion based on value vs performance. I'm probably jaded by my experience. Rightfully so. But in my estimation premium prices should be based on objective premium performance. If you just want pretty veneer, that can be had for less.

And it should fit the table.

By the way, whoever turns up with the Cain and Cain solid teak plinth with walnut supports and brass accents...that was either mine or his. He made two.
