Being that I'm still in amateur mode myself I'll try ...

I don't have a lot of experience with different DACs but assuming you already have some cables and you stick with modi and loki, the next question is software. I believe there is some free programs out there. I just started the digital music myself. I'm experimenting with Audirvana and Amarra. Computer Audiophile is a good online source.

I would think that the Modi and Loki would be a fine starting point for $300.

amateur question here. if i was to buy a very cheap modi dac and add the loki dsd to it, what else would i need besides that . just some storage on a hardrive? would this be feasable just to get me started on the digital road. shhh dont tell anyone im asking about digital.lol.
i mean im not looking for anything super sounding, just enough to get me started on the cheap and i can go from there. both those pieces can be had for under $300.
am i thinking correctly here??

sweet , yea i got loads of cables but would get a decent usb cable as well. my next question was going to be me putting up a thread on which software i should go for. but ill wait until i have all the stuff here. i think this is what i will do. thanks!!!

Awesome! Please report back. I'm curious what you think coming from what looks to be a pretty substantial analog setup. I recently purchased a Parasound P5 which has a built-in DAC. Just got the DAC going last month. I ripped my CD collection and have been comparing it to my player. I've noticed more detail through the DAC, but I've lost some three dimensionality in the sound stage. Thats why I've been researching other DAC's. But being my 1st time into the digital side and limited local knowledge, its difficult to decide which way to go.

will do, basically im getting this to play the records i like that i dont have on vinyl yet or are not on vinyl at all. or are recorded badly on vinyl. should be fun ill report back on my outcome!!

I had a Gungnir awhile back. It was one of those pieces that I left go, then regretted it.

I need to stop doing that.

Thanks for bringing the Yggdrasil to my attention. I note that it will be "the ultimate expression of Schitt's bit-perfect approach, and the antithesis of noise-shaping DACs and technologies such as DSD".

Of course it will, just like all digital fads, including MQA.

but I can't help but feel that my next DAC ought to be DSD-capable.

Not interested in DSD. Others may feel differently about the issue, but I think one of my smartest decisions ever in audio was not to fall for SACD (also a DSD format). I knew it would fail. Glad I didn't waste any time, money and effort on that format. I still don't own a single SACD, and I probably never will (unless for some weird reason music that I may be interested in is only on a hybrid SACD/CD). I am 100% PCM, 100% CD. That's where all the music is.

I am now very interested in trying a Schiit Yggdrasil.
