Schiit Audio Yggdrasil Review

Have you ever tried comparing a redbook CD? If so , what did you prefer the K01X or the YGGY connected to your Moon transport?

mdp632.......I have not auditioned the MOON 260D transport through the Esoteric K-01X DAC. I have, however, compared the K-01X DAC to the Yggdrasill DAC. The results were quite interesting.

Now that my new system is almost broken in I am discovering more and more the capabilities of the Yggy. Just yesterday evening and this morning my jaw was on the floor with the Trio of Doom (John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius, Tony Williams). I may never have heard this specific kind of animal forward rhythmic drive before in music / the reproduction of it. The dynamics and quick impact of the drums were to die for as well. I was a few times laughing out loud for joy and amazement, no kidding. Of course, the source is where it starts, and the Yggdrasil DAC again proved what a stunning rhythmic performer it is.

Digital used to always literally lag behind analog in rhythm (in its early days, painfully so), but not anymore. Now it is analog (vinyl) that needs to prove itself to me if it can do rhythmically what I hear from Redbook digital via the Yggy.

Thanks. The 260 DT has been part of the two systems, a friend's and mine, where I have heard the highest resolution so far from digital -- resolution of timbre, e.g. micro texture on solo and massed violins, and separation of instruments (the latter in my friend's system on orchestra). The strong rhythm may in part also be due to the transport feeding a high-quality signal to the DAC. I have found that the specific digital cable (MIT SL-Matrix Plus AES/EBU cable) contributes a good part to the sound quality as well. It costs as much as the transport and almost as much as the Yggy, but it's worth it.

Operation is as responsive, smooth and quiet as Dan describes in his review of the transport.
