Samsung Galaxy S10 upgrade

The new Samsung Galaxy S10 phone arrived a few days ago. I pre-ordered it last month directly from Samsung's website using their generous trade-in policy. Samsung allowed $550.00 trade value for my Galaxy S9 against the $900.00 Galaxy S10 price, plus free shipping and a $150.00 gift certificate good at the Samsung store to purchase Samsung's new Bluetooth wireless Galaxy Buds. The entire deal made it too good to pass up.

All I can say is the Galaxy S10 is quite a step up from the Galaxy S9. The edge to edge UHD display is incredibly crisp, clear, and fast. The under screen ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is amazing, the three cameras on the back allow for a lot of creativity and produce remarkable photographs, and it shoots 4K video with the front facing and rear facing cameras. The S10 comes standard with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage, plus it provides for an external micro SD card that supports up to 512GB. I have a 256GB microSD card in my new S10 for a total storage capacity of 384GB. That's a ton of memory for a cellphone. The battery is 3400mAh in size and I am getting almost 2 full days use before I park it on the wireless fast charger. The phone also comes with a pair of AKG wired ear buds that sound surprisingly good.

Setting up the S10 is reminiscent of setting up a computer. In fact, that's what you are doing. Moving my AT&T SIM card from the S9 to the S10 was a snap. I immediately had 4G service. It took me about 4 hours to get everything else transferred from my Galaxy S9 and get the phone's various features set up just the way I wanted, including multiple email accounts sync'd, Samsung Pay, Samsung Galaxy Watch, network connected via WiFi to both of my Aurender music servers, Sonos, TV's, security cameras, and working with the WiFi connection to my Blackview 4K dash cam in the Tahoe and the Bluetooth connection to the Tahoe sound system for hands-free calling. I tweaked many of the settings to my personal preference and had a ball playing with the S10's capabilities. I am still becoming familiar with the plethora of user features this phone has to offer.

I purchased 2 Spigen cases for the Galaxy S10, one black Neo Hybrid and one Liquid Crystal clear case. I ordered my S10 in Prism Blue and ultimately decided I preferred the Liquid Crystal clear case on the phone the best as seen in the two photos below. The black Spigen Neo Hybrid case looks good on the phone but I like being able to see the color of the phone and the metal trim through the clear case.

There's plenty of YouTube videos on the new Samsung Galaxy S10, so no point in going through a long dissertation explaining everything the S10 is capable of doing. This video is a light overview and enjoyable to watch if you are interested.





I've had my Galaxy S10 for three days and already love everything about it. It is slightly taller and slightly wider than my Galaxy S9 but nowhere near as gargantuan as the S10+ model. I can still carry the S10 in my front pocket comfortably. Also interesting is the S10 is slightly lighter than the S9. And a word about the newest One UI Android 9 software. It is intuitive, feature packed, and operates extremely fast and fluid running on the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. The Dynamic AMOLED touchscreen delivers 16M colors and ultra dark blacks with a resolution of 1440 x 3040 pixels. Pixel density is 550 ppi. The screen is a true treat for the eyes. All in all the new Samsung Galaxy S10 is a remarkable phone. I can easily recommend the Galaxy S10 without reservation.

Every time I see new Galaxy series make me think to go back with Android again. Tempting so tempting but it’s hard for me drop the iPhone.

I love the new 3 new camera with ultra wide angle too and to me Android is few steps ahead of iOS. Also I miss the “ schedule message “ function so much it really comes in handy to not forget next day or even a week ahead.

Only thing still bothers me is back ground app running - just hate it every time you open up there are apps running. Also somehow I don’t feel confident enough to using my bank apps with Android ( please don’t ask me why lol ) I just don’t.

Maybe one day I will go back to then perhaps with new Fold ? Will see

I decided to try another Spigen case for my new Samsung Galaxy S10 phone. Although I like the look of the Spigen Liquid Crystal clear case, its design concept was to keep it as thin as possible while still affording scratch resistance to the frame and glass back. It barely made the phone feel any larger than without the case. Unfortunately I felt the case did not offer enough drop defense provided by other Spigen case designs. I wanted to stay with a clear case so I ordered the Spigen Ultra Hybrid S clear case, a considerably more robust case, yet still comfortably compact without adding substantial bulk to the phone. The hybrid construction combines a shock-absorbent bumper with a clear back designed for long-lasting clarity. Its simple makeup maintains a slim frame with a built-in stand on the back. The stand is held closed by a hidden magnet, and held open with a tiny spring. A very slick design. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid S fits my Galaxy S10 perfectly, compliments the look and allows me to see the Prism Blue color. I like this Spigen case a lot. Loving this new Galaxy S10.

Looks good Dan! Great choice and looks like a terrific deal!

I upgraded to the Apple XR (from a 3+ year old 6) late last year. While I like my phone, I’m afraid Apple is falling behind on innovation (feels like a faster and better battery life than the 6 I had - that’s it! Ok, maybe a nicer camera as well), inflated high prices and no clear path for the 5G network. In my opinion, the lack of 5G makes it a no brainer to skip the XS and higher priced models.

Mike.......Your Apple XR is a nice phone with a very good display. Apple's A12 processor produces some of the fastest benchmarks of any phone, and there's much to be admired by Apples secure face ID. It is a nice phone for sure, and the price is relatively reasonable.

As for 5G, it is still a network in progress with minimal market penetration at this time and a long way from being available in the more rural areas of this country. I personally think 4G is remarkably good, and the 4G nationwide network is well provided even to rural area customers. No doubt 5G will eventually be the accepted standard but it will be a while before we see coverage that rivals that of 4G. Consequently, I don't see myself getting too excited about 5G. It is interesting to note that Samsung has introduce the first new 5G phone, the Galaxy S10 5G. It has not been released yet, but it is just around the corner. It is a large phone, even bigger than the Galaxy S10+ as seen in this photo.

Although Samsung is the first 5G phone on the market in the US, there are other 5G phones from Huawie, and LG slated for release later in 2019. No doubt there will be plenty more. Here is an interesting article about the new Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
