Samsung Acquires Harman Corporation (Revel, Mark Levinson, etc.)

I saw that article. I find it ironic that the company which turned 30 years of classic Infinity speakers into the world's most pathetic garage sale are getting swallowed by a bigger kid on the block. I mean, I wonder is Samsung can stomp on the ghost of Infinity past any more than Harman, lol!

Looks like the whole deal is tied to Samsung going after Harmans automotive products "" The company Harman builds infotainment, connected safety, security and telematics devices and services used in over 30 million vehicles built by BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen and other automakers."

That's the entire reason...the high-end piece (Revel, ML, AKG, etc...) is a insignificant portion of Harman's business (rounding error).

I met the top execs in NY and TX who run the home appliances and mobile divisions. Super smart and competitive biz leaders. A take no prisoners approach (e.g. apple), and a strong vertical mentality (make or control in-house all components and parts necessary for an offering like screens and chips etc). They are also keen on biz and financial acumen and focus. If there is a small section of Harman etc that is esoteric high end without great growth and margin opportunities I bet it will be ramped down/out or repurposed to fit into tightly focused home/mobile connected platform, especially if the mobile division is taking the lead. I could see the home consumer/appliance division changing focus to connected home and home theater. If I was an engineer or product manager at those companies I would be designing some killer audio equipment like a dac/server that also opens and closes your garage and tells you when your ice tray in the fridge is empty.

7 billion in Yr sales and sold for 8 billion ..??? seems strange, I can see the high end luxury stuff being sold off instead of being diminished ala Infinity ....

Wow, not sure what to think about this. I'm not really surprised about the sell as it's just one of many a higher end companies to be bought and sole, and when you think of it ML has been bought and sold a few times. I'm surprised who bought them, but reading the article, ML had something Samsung wanted.
