Hi all.....just letting anyone who is interested in listening to the Magico S5's that they arrived yesterday. I know that they will transform over the next 500 hrs. etc, but I am quite surprised how good they sounded right out of the crates. Maybe I'm just easy, but they the S5's were endearing from the first note. Actually when I installed the S5's they were almost ice cold from the Aluminum and being in the truck. But they sure did not sound cold.

The Absolare SET's have no problem whatsoever driving the S5's. The pair of S5's that are here now will be going out to CES along with the Absolare electronics at the end of December, but until then they are available for demo. I can also run SS amps on them for anyone that would like that combination.

That's awesome Bob. Has Steve called yet?!!! :)

Sure wish I lived closer.

Steve is aware and will be visiting soon......I hope so anyway. Wish you could just "pop over" Doug. Btw Doug, really enjoying all the great music that you left for me last month....really appreciate it.

I'm glad you're digging the music. It's the least I could do for all your hospitality.

Hi Mark....COOL. My S1's and S3's will be here after CES. What all is David getting?

It does !!

David and I were talking about the S series Magico's, and we both think the S3's are going to be a hit at their price point !

Bob - you must know people! I ordered mine weeks before yours and mine are not here.

:sneaky:.....This pair arrived a little early because we have to break them in prior to CES where the will be shown with the Absolare electronics. After listening to them right out of the crates, I would have felt comfortable taking them to CES right now....seriously.

Nice Bob!!! Actually I moved in your building I live upstairs now.
Keep that noise to a minimum down there will ya!!!! :D

I'd love to get up there before Christmas and hear these . And I want to hear the d3's now that you seem to have them setup perfectly. And you know as well as I do I don't want to hear them with anything but tubes . Lol!!! Although I did like that telos 280.
Congrats on the early Christmas present!!!

I thought that I heard a guy chasing a few gals around the halls late last night in the hallway upstairs....now I understand!

Yeah, it's fun now with both the S5's and the D3's. They actually each sound excellent in the exact same spot. I only will set one up at a time anymore as I've found there is one really good spot, actually a few feet back towards the window wall and closer together as well. It takes 10 minutes to move one pair out of the way and bring the other into place.....it's fun waltzing around the room with each of them.

Sooooooo

How do they compare to the D3s - I know ya can't really compare but - first impressions????
Hahaha!!! You can't ask Bob that question he's in love with his d3's and just from the talks we've had , he wouldn't trade em for anything in the world. But what do I know. I can't wait to hear the differences !!!!
And bobs don't pop for some reason. The first time we heard then they did. But all the setup he has done to them . He has fixed the popping. I see fear in his eyes when I turn up the volume on some things. But I haven't heard any pops on my last couple trips up there.

GREAT QUESTION, right? It is actually interesting because over the last month I finally got the D3's "dialed in". That came with speaker placement and then the Ansuz cables. I've said it before but I had all of the Raidhos too wide and too far out into the room.

I just wrote two paragraphs, but I erased them, because the truth is I like them both. I did have a heck of lot harder time getting the D3's locked in, but now I really love everything about the D3's. The S5's were dead cold, literally yesterday and I connected them up and they just started to sing immediately. Although I think because I had found the "sweet spot" for the D3's and then just put the S5's in the same place, it might have made things a little easier for the S5's.

They are definitely different and then you have to throw in the $30K/$66K variable so ???? The biggest observation would be in the bass with the sealed box of the S5's vs. the porting of the D3's. Sealed box bass is usually tighter and more controlled and that is the case here. Both speakers throw a wide deep soundstage, both layer extremely well, there are differences in the midrange and the high end, but it's not fair to really comment on the S5's yet, at least until they have a few hundred hours. But they do sound good enough now that I have a demo for the S5's in 2 hours and I'm totally confident with the sound to provide a good demo.

Anyway, now I have both of them so interested parties can come and decide for themselves in the same room with the same electronics.......personally I am a very happy camper and appreciate being able to have both of these special speakers.:satisfying:

They don't pop.

:roflmao:Hilarious Mike, Actually like Steve said, as long as I don't go over about 95 db, regardless of what I play my D3's stopped popping. Not sure if it was the break in but I know that once I moved my D3's closer together and further back towards the back wall they haven't popped once. But I do only play at around 90db anyway.

I had the S5's blasting away last night as loud as I would ever play them, I took out the db meter and I was sure I was at a constant 100db....when I looked I was at 90db constant with 92db peaks and that was it.

The big 10 inch woofers can pressurize a big space (that's why I bought them for my 45 foot room). To me, they have a slightly darker, fuller sound than the D3's....but no less enjoyable. To me, they represent a clear evolution in sound for Magico. I've heard all the Q series speakers (except for the Q7) and I don't want to start that whole debate again, but to me, the S5 is better all around, more musical, more enjoyable than any of the Q series speakers I've auditioned. Yes, the S series costs less, but they deliver more. YMMV.

Congrats again Bob. We look forward to your updates.

I may be getting ahead of myself but I just have the feeling that the s1 being affordable and also being a 2 way speaker (which I love) will give me enough enjoyment that I could be happy with my veneres and a pair of s1's to go back and fourth between for the rest of my days!!!
Just a thought!!! My biggest thing is that I love those d1's too and I want the s1's to get the d1's and their high price out of my head!!!
