S5 spike

David, when you install the S5 spikes make sure to first put the nut onto the spike. First time I installed my spikes I just screwed them in, and later couldn't get them out since there is no way to grip the smooth conical spike.

Hi Charles, yeah my decisions now are very much influenced by what i'm planning 6 months-2yrs down the line. The good news is I finally managed to swing a time for my Tech friend to come over on Sunday to help out with setting up my system :). We'll be installing the factory spikes, getting the Ultra 6's set up in their final position & tweaking both the speaker and seating position.

I can't wait to hear how my system sounds after all the changes which include my Vitus SCD-025 (upgraded from Aesthetix Romulus), Ultra 6's (upgraded from Ultra 5's), Jorma Statement sc's (upgraded from Jorma Prime), re-terminated Prime pc's (upgraded from stock Prime pc's), Furutech GTX-D(g) (upgraded from non-cryo'd Oyaide R1) & spiking the S5's...huge changes!

David,

You are very smart to plan ahead in this way. It will save you a lot of money and time. I'll be purchasing a new audio rack shortly and all my Kimber Select cable purchases were designed for the new rack. Not optimal currently but in a couple months...wow! Best of luck on your vision quest!!

Thanks Bud, that's good advice. That reminds I should have a read of the owner's manual tonight to ensure I don't screw it up!

Hi Ken,

Thanks. Yeah I tend to make most of my changes on paper well before I lay down any money. I find that gives me a lot of time to think about whether the component, cable or speaker is what I really want, whether it will have good synergy in my system & to consider if it fits into my 'balanced system' approach. I've found that having the luxury of time has also allowed me to ask Manufacturers lots of questions & perhaps more importantly, get feedback from like-minded audiophiles & audio friends who own the same or similar gear. Only recently, the feedback I received from one of my audio buddies who owns a component I was considering buying caused me to substantially revamp my future plans (for the better).

ps: Which rack have you chosen Ken? You're wise considering the synergy between your racks/isolation & cables. Wood or composite wood shelves i've found add weight and body, though if you're using additional footers, you really just want a solid platform for your footers to work optimally.

David, on the other hand, you can rationalize you aren't getting any younger, and you might not be able to enjoy something a few years from now. So, you may as well enjoy it now, of course, after doing your homework. That is what I have done, and to be honest, I am glad I did. However, I feel I now have to work a few more years to recover the retirement money I have spent on the stereo/HT. Which is fine, I can live with that, and enjoy my stereo now. Once I retire there will be no stereo purchases.

That's true. I'm not 25 anymore & you do have to put a line in the sand at some point and say "I'm happy" & focus on other, more important things. Actually the current system i'm building I plan on keeping for 18-20 years as I did with my first system. Fortunately there is light at the end of the tunnel...when we get my system setup tomorrow, it will be an epoch moment in my audio journey with so many things coming together. I'm really looking forward to hearing how my new Vitus player & Statement cables improve through the run in process, whilst my S5's are also still well off the magical 1000hr mark. After my amp upgrades later this year, I plan to just enjoy my music & movies for the foreseeable future. Though when a future replacement for the S5 comes out, I will upgrade.

Big +1 on this, Bud, I'm with you 100% on this point. In fact, I'll curtail all major purchases when I'm 10 years out. This gives me a few more years to pursue the holy grail. ;)

Best,
Ken

...and what a treat for us to share in your system changes/upgrades along your audio journey Ken! :)
