S1 in the house!

These S1 talks aren't really good for the health of my wallet.

Great to hear Mike! It will get even better after about 200 hours.

The Lumin is such a joy to use and listen to.

Here is what I don't like about using a laptop as a digital server running JRiver software and using an iPad as the remote: Digital played back this way is very wonky in that the iPad is constantly losing a connection with the laptop which forces you to reboot the iPad to regain the handshake. Sometimes I can go a week without this happening and sometimes I end up rebooting several times in one listening session like I did last night.

I couldn't agree more Mark! Thank goodness Lumin doesn't use JRiver and a computer. The Lumin and iPad/iPad app are standalone and seamless and things are even simpler with a L1 or two, or five in the picture.

The past two months I've been messing around with other DACS and devices and nothing has changed. It's still an exercise in frustration. I don't want to nerd out, I just want to listen. I always go back to my Lumin - it sounds great and it just works.

Ritmo (Mike), is the Lumin replacing the DAC8? After you've lived with it for a while I'll be very interested in your comparison.

Bob,

Yes, the S1 is replacing both the ARC DAC8 and the Bryston BDP-2. I'll be putting both for sale here tomorrow.

Differences in sound are definitely there. Sometimes is hard to tell differences with DACs but in this case is not as subtle. The DAC8 traditionally has excelled in the bottom end and, in my view, it has a deeper bottom than the S1; however, the S1 has a tighter bottom. Where the S1 stands out is in the top and middle ranges. I was talking with Mark earlier today, I'm hearing detail and information, from music I know very well, that I've never heard before. The stage and instrument separation is fantastic. And, the interface is second to none. Finally, I just simplified my system and rack - less components and cables.

The Bryston and ARC pieces are very nice and someone will be a very happy owner.

Hope that helps Bob. Still breaking in the Lumin. Maybe Bud will comment as well. He received his S1 today.

Cheers!
