This might be in earlier firmware versions but as soon as I powered it on on 3/21/15 it updated the firmware to 3.0.7.

Currently, I have the Lumin in my secondary system to get burned in before going to the main system. So far, it sounds great and performs well, but it has a major bug that will prevent me from moving it until it is fixed. The problem is that sometimes when a song starts playing a strong burst of static is output after the song has played 1 or 2 seconds. This has happened three times now in the last week. If I stop the song and restart it then it does not reoccur.

Anyway, I cannot take the chance of this occurring in my main system since I will sometimes have the volume up, and that burst of static will fry a tweeter. The last thing I need to do now is fry another Magico S5 tweeter.

Bud, I'll double check, but my S1 firmware is 5.1.

Bud - My software is version 3.0.7 as well. I have not experienced that situation yet.

Bud - it seems the issue is with those using an external HD. Jerry uses an external HD and he had the same issue last night. I will send a note to Lumin and let them know.

I got the same issue last night from a WD My Book - 4 TB drive. It was doing it on redbook songs upsampled to DSD. It onlt did it on the first few seconds of the song. It was pretty loud though, and a bit worrisome.

I am at the latest firmware whatever the number. I am still getting used to finding stuff on the app.

I contacted Lumin last night, and their suggestions were.

1. Try a direct attached USB drive. That is my setup
2. Turn off up sampling. That is my setup
3. Don't connect both RCA and XLR connections. I am only using XLR.

It is a very rare bug, but it is there. I have been playing it continuously at night all week. One night it happened twice, and once last night. I cannot afford another $800 tweeter, so it has to stay in the HT setup until fixed.

I encountered the same issue once when I started using my A1 last year, but with a NAS.

Song starts, burst of static then silence.

Wrote to Lumin but issue never happened again.

Hope you find a solution soon.

Sorry for the trouble!

I just shifted through some of my ALAC files on USB HDD for 2 hours now, without any issue. In fact I never encounter such problem! Most of my ALAC files are encoded by dBpoweramp and iTune.

I think the problem is somewhat file related, instead of USB HDD related. There are many minor differences in each encoding format, by different encoding program etc. Even though the problem may seems random, I'd still want a test file which once exhibited the noise issue to easier reproduce the problem.

If possible, please upload 1 or 2 sample file which did exhibited such issue, to an online storage such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Then send me the download link by PM or email to [email protected] for me to test.

Thanks!

psme, thank you for working on this issue. When I start using my secondary system tomorrow I will do my best to reproduce this. I really want to get the S1 into my main system as soon as possible.

I realize how difficult these bugs are. I make a decent living developing software to test other networking software. These bugs are job security. :)

So far I have not encountered this issue with my S1. For reference, most of my music files are AIFF with a handful of DSD.

This could be a clue that it is file related, but it's not conclusive. All my CD rips are ALAC done with iTunes on Windows XP, and if I worked at Lumin I would concentrate on ALAC files ripped via iItunes. Perhaps the problem is in that section of playback code. I do know that playing these files on a Bryston BDP-1 the problem never occurred once, yet it occurred three times in my first week with the Lumin S1.

Keep those comments coming. If we all work together we should be able to identify this issue and fix it. I want my S1 in the main system.

I just installed a test version of 5.0.11. Unfortunately, I have to go to work, so I will not be able to really test until tonight. If I can get to Friday without the white noise burst occuring then I will put the S1 into the main system for the definitve Friday night test. If I end up having to buy a new S5 tweeter I will be P.O.ed :)
