I have a Rotel RCD-950 CD player. The problem I'm having is when a CD is inserted, the door closes, but the carriage will not go up. As a result, the player doesn't recognize the CD and opens the door with the message 'No CD Recognized.' I have the top off, so I can put my finger under the carriage and manually push it up; after that, the player will recognize the CD and play. Other than a small motor, I can't see what operates the carriage. I see a small square belt that drives the door; I have a new one of those coming. I don't know if that has anything to do with the carriage operation or not. I bought this system in 1998, and it consists of a Rotel RB-991 amp, RC-980-BX Pre Amp, RT-935 Tuner, the RCD-950 CD Player, and an Audio-Technica AT-LP 120 USB turntable.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I cannot offer any good help for your issue, but will say that the newer models are really good. The Tribute is pretty economical and will blow away your old one. I have the 1572 and right after I got it they came out with a Mark II model with different DAC. Just sold my 1072 Sunday.

There's often a spring which drives the mechanism to raise the carriage, so if you can access and see the area you should ensure that the spring hasn't broken and is properly connected. Sometimes the mechanism that drives the carriage can get hung up and need some lubrication which can also sometimes fix such problems. Good luck with the repair!

Thanks, I'll look into it. I'll also check out your recommendations on the other units.

I'm going to take the carriage out of the unit today, so I'll be sure to check the spring out. I was able to put a small amount of lubrication on the rotating part that raises the carriage. Thanks.
