Roon Server running on Synology & QNAP NAS (x64)

Mike,

A friend of mine swears that Roon on Linux sounds best. I'm sure Rock is the same, a lightweight Linux version.

If using the network RAAT endpoint in your QX-5 it's not going to matter what's upstream as long as it has enough power to do any DSPing you might want to do.

Excellent, thank you.

+1

Roon on Linux may sound better than Windows or iOS when using direct USB connection. When streaming via Ethernet, it shouldn't matter.

I finally settled on Roon running on ROCK. Very lightweight setup and installation. No monitor. No need to run optimization software as one might on Mac OS or with Windows.

Originally my Intel NUC 6i5SYH was running Windows 10 Pro with RoonServer. Worked great and the only thing I ever had to do was remotely login to the NUC to turn it off. I had it configured with an M.2 drive s my boot drive and a second 2TB SSD to hold a subset of my music files.

Since than I have reconfigured it with ROCK, again booting off the M.2 drive and music being stored on the second SSD. I turn on my NAS when I need access to the remainder of my music library. And I no longer have to remotely login as I can turn the system off via a web browser with ROCK. Very happy with this setup.

Got all the parts from Amazon, though of course there are lots of places that sell the stuff required ( NUC, 8GB Memory, M.2 drive, SSD ). Only needed a monitor for the initial setup of ROCK including updating the BIOS. The posted directions on the Roon site are very helpful.

Like mostly happens when this topic comes up this is now getting complicated with NUC's and ROCK's and other dedicated hardware. Roon wants 1200 - 2000 Dollar for a device that is not necessary. And we state that the suitable NASses are too expensive. I don't know but I spend 60 Dollar for a SSD with USB 3.0 and it is working hassle free on the NAS in the basement. And the music collection is still dedicated on the built-in hard discs.
Personally I don't want another device or a computer to play music from my NAS.
Just my two cents of course.

Too complex. I loaded Roon Core onto my MacBook Pro. I exported my Sooloos files in Native Format to a 2GB USB drive which I plugged into my Apple TimeCapsule. Roon sees my Meridian DAC. I use my iPad to control everything wirelessly.

All of these separate music servers are basically single purpose built, way over prices computers. Roon makes it easy, no reason for monitor, keyboard, etc. Just use Roon headless server on a computer (or server if you want to waste money). Can control it from a tablet, including Microsoft Surface Pro. I install Windows 10 Pro so as to have Remote Desktop. This lets me connect to the server from my Surface for any maintenances or loading files. i7 CPU, 16 GB RAM, only SSD's, Gold Power Supply, mounted on granite base... turn off all unnecessary services.... I will put it against any of your $10k + servers out there... and directly connected to a Recovery to the DAC, no worries about Network, etc. I had my house pre-wired.... you still get Network issues...

Running Roon server on NAS can be challenging down the line - its impossible for the NAS h/w to keep up with the s/w demands when more features are added to Roon. For example, today you might not need the up-sampling feature but tomorrow you might buy a DAC which can sound excellent up-sampling to, lets say DSD256 or DSD512. The NAS aren't (and never will) built to do these kind of duties. I would get a NUC and install either ROCK or install Roon server on Windows and leave the NAS to do its file server duties...

I am currently running ROCK on an i7 custom home built server w/ 4tb hard drive for the music files. Having used this server with various OS and s/w, like Windows (Roon server, HQP, etc), Daphile, Audiolinux etc, this is the best sound I have heard to date. I leave my NAS to do just the back up duties....
